Intresting article about Abrams and the film. The only thing that concerns me a bit is that Abrams says that he owns all the Star Trek DVDs, but has not seen every episode. With that aside, he still feels like he has seen enough to make the film. I sure hope he's right.

I seem to recall a story about Nicholas Meyer not being steeped in Trek lore either when he started watching the classic episodes and came across Space Seed and wondered what a sequel to that might be like.
I'm cautiously optimistic, but then I also like that series reboot proposal by J. Michael Strazynski that came out recently.

I thought Abrams handled the Mission Impossible series really well and I think he'll do the same for this one. This is a franchise that needs a pump of adrenaline and I think Abrams will deliver. Paramount has confidence since they gave him a 5 year contract.

This movie is going to hinge on who directs it and most importantly who is cast. It's paramount (no pun intended).

Regardless, I think the way Meyer approached it is what makes it so good. The Trek characters are story archetypes anyways, so you just make a good story, then plug in the characters. As long as they don't go against tradition, it'll work. It seems the last couple of movies and the last two series were approached as "let's make a new Star Trek series/movie" first, and then they started looking for stories. The best approach is to see what kind of story you can tell, then see how you can make a Trek story around that.
I'm not dismissing a young Kirk and Spock movie out of hand. I'll give this new guy a chance, but only because he's bringing something new to the table.

Not interested, not a fan of classic trek, or most prequels for that matter. Why can't they just do something post DS9? Is it really that hard? I didn't catch the last couple of seasons of Voyager, did the whole universe blow up or something? What's the deal?
That said, I might rent it if I'm bored. Though if Abrams starts off with that whole "show you part of the ending, then go back to the beginning and work your way forwards" style again...seriously drives me nuts. MI3 felt like a freakin' Alias episode (though GOOD alias!), and that style got old on Alias quite fast...

Spoiler:
There was very little mention about what happened in the Alpha Quadrant after DS9 in either Voyager (which is understandable given their situation) nor the Movies. The only real change to Star Trek continuity was with the Romulans in Nemesis. Insurrection really provided nothing to the Star Trek storyline.
