You know, I LOVE Gary Oldman in so many movies he's done, even if he is sometimes ridiculously over-the-top, which he has a tendency to be, a la The Professional and Prisoner Of Azkaban. But this rarely happens: When I first saw the trailer for The Last King Of Scotland, I was like, "Not only will Forest Whitaker be nominated for Best Actor come Oscar-time, he will win it." This without even seeing the movie. It's almost the same reaction I had when I saw the first trailer for The Dark Knight, except I knew it wasn't very likely he'd win it, but I was pretty sure he'd get a nomination. His death might have made that more of a possibility, but there was something there that just registered with me and took this from a "must-see" to a "dear God, why can't this already be out?!" feeling. I will, of course, have to see the entire performance and in context to fully gauge it, but tragedy and all, I will be very surprised if he doesn't at least get the nod.
I've always been a pretty big fan of his work, even since 10 Things I Hate About You (to a certain degree) and A Knight's Tale. But I felt his performance in Brokeback Mountain made you actually ache and suffer along with him. I mean, christ, I'm a straight male, and even I could relate to that scene where he's in the alleyway, just completely falling apart, insides ripped clean out. It's an intense performance from someone who was truly talented. And he was no one-trick pony. I admired the hell out of him for going completely against the norm in most of his choices, and not just playing on his looks. He wasn't just pretty looks and no substance. Hell, I even said that the best part of The Brothers Grimm was his performance (which, I guess, isn't saying much) and it's probably the only reason I own that movie. (Well, that and because I didn't spend any money on it. It was a gift.) And while Cate Blanchett got most of the praise (and praise was definitely warranted) for I'm Not There, I walked out of that movie thinking Heath actually gave the best performance, partly because it didn't draw too much attention to itself. Then, a couple months later, he was gone.
I'm definitely looking forward to his final completed performance, which just so happens to be my most anticipated movie since, well, the last one came out in 2005.
Sorry for the "rant". Back on topic, would it be silly of me to call out of work for the next week, just to avoid anything possibly happening to me that might stop me from seeing this opening night? Bring on the dark!!

Once again, our city shines on film. New York can make all the claims it wants to make, but Chicago IS Gotham City in "The Dark Knight," the highly anticipated Batman movie coming to theaters July 18.
I'll be reviewing it on "At the Movies with Ebert & Roeper" this weekend, but for now let's just say that it will be a huge upset if the late Heath Ledger ISN'T nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor -- and it won't be due to some maudlin sympathy vote.
Ledger doesn't have to steal every scene he's in because he walks in and owns it from the get-go. This is one of the funniest, creepiest, darkest, most interesting and most amazing performances I've seen in any movie this decade.

"We never got to the negotiating stage" for "Dark Knight," says Julie Polkes, a spokeswoman for Ms. Holmes. "Katie was offered ["Dark Knight"] but was unable to accept the role because of scheduling conflicts. She was in the process of negotiating for another project. In addition, when she returns to work, she would like to tackle a new character." A spokeswoman for Warner Bros. concurs that Ms. Holmes dropped out because of timing.

I also believe that Holmes was Warner's choice from the beginning as a compromise with Nolan to get his other choices. They probably wanted someone who would appeal to the MTV crowd but her relationship with Cruise didn't help much and so I think they just wanted to cut ties and recast with a far superior actress.

The Holmes-Cruise stuff really kicked into high gear the weeks before Batman Begins was released. This probably bothered WB because they were already worried to all hell that Batman Begins would tank because of the rep of Batman & Robin. Does anyone remember the discussions on this board about what would happen if Begins tanked? Nobody knew what was going to happen with the movie.
I believe the casting choice was forced on Nolan for the first film, as this is what a lot of reports did point at back then. I don't believe that Nolan wanted to break with a new actresss for TDK though. I think he fully believed she would be back or they wouldn't have left the Dawes character in the script. I'm looking forward to Maggie's performance though with much higher hopes than Holmes.

NY TIMES, July 9, 2008
LOS ANGELES — “The Dark Knight” just spilled over into early morning.
In a frenzy, fans have bought so many late-night tickets for the July 18 opening of the next Batman movie that theaters in places like San Diego, Chicago, and even Eagan, Minn., are scheduling 6 a.m. screenings for those who can’t get in at midnight or 3 in the morning.
Movie theaters have sometimes opened their doors at odd hours for their most highly anticipated films, say, an entry in the “Star Wars” series, and midnight shows have become part of the summer blockbuster ritual.
But all-night sellouts far in advance of an opening have come only with the near ubiquity of online ticket sales. Fandango.com, for instance, reports well over 1,500 wee-hour showings for “The Dark Knight” in theaters that typically do not open their doors before about 10 a.m.
“The Dark Knight,” which stars Christian Bale as Batman, is directed by Christopher Nolan. It builds on his “Batman Begins,” which took in more than $200 million at the domestic box office for Warner Brothers after opening to a solid, but not spectacular, $49 million in domestic ticket sales in June 2005. The film also had strong sales on DVD.
This time much of the fan interest has been driven by word of a career-topping performance by Heath Ledger, the Australian actor who died in January. His louche interpretation of the Joker has already inspired Oscar talk.
“In the public mind, opening weekends have been eventized,” said Thomas Tull, the chairman of Legendary Pictures and an executive producer of “The Dark Knight.”
Increasingly, fans have paid certain movie openings — most recently that of “Sex and the City” — the attention once reserved for rock concerts, basketball games or the introduction of a hot product like the iPhone.
About 38 percent of ticket buyers polled by Fandango said in a recent survey that they intended to take some or all of July 18 off to see “The Dark Knight.”
While Sony Pictures opened “Hancock,” Will Smith’s somewhat arch take on superheroes, to a respectable $66 million last weekend (it has made more than $100 million to date), much of the audience had jumped ahead.
According to Movietickets.com, about one in four of the respondents to a survey of moviegoers under 25 polled between June 24 and June 28 said “The Dark Knight” was the next movie he or she expected to see in theaters.
Viewers seeking Imax screenings may have to wait. All of the first week’s showings at Lincoln Square are sold out, except for some 6 a.m. screenings, Whit Clay, an Imax spokesman, said.
And the box-office winner for the summer will most likely be .....
