Re: Wolverine - Solo

I don't really mind that they changed him if the change had been like the changes to the characters in the first X-Men (well, except for Sabretooth and Mystique took some getting used to). Heck, even Juggernaut never bothered me since they were clearly taking their cues from Ultimate X-Men.

What bothers me is that Deadpool in the movie is a totally different character. Why even call him Deadpool (even if technically they don't). Just make up Weapon XI as a movie exclusive character. I doubt anyone would have complained. Although, to be honest, Weapon XI is pointless when all they had to focus on was Wolverine vs. Sabretooth with Stryker's agenda (which would spill over into and conclude in X2) unfolding in the background.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

AICN's has had it in for the movie from the start, same with X3... whenever they get this fanatical I just have to tune them out... X3 although a half hour short was in-line with the others and a perfectly enjoyable movie for me... same with Wolvie. A little disappointing IF the reports are true, maybe we'll get an extended version on DVD...

I do think they went overboard with the cameos, they fell into the trap of trying to connect it too much to the other movies instead of just making it it's own beast.... other than that, I'll look forward to the finished sound and effects. I'm just hoping the music can be as good as the temp Crimson Tide and Transformers music - lol!

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Well Harry Gregson-Williams did the finished score so it'll likely be worth a listen.

I too found X-Men: The Last Stand serviceable but they bit off more than they could chew. They should have either focused on the cure or focused on Phoenix. Having both those stories competing for screentime in a streamlined action flick was a very bad idea.

They should have taken their cues from X2 that was more focused with it's only misstep being how the brisk pacing suddenly halts once they reach the dam.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

I saw X3 alot, more so than X2 because of the constant HBO/Cinemax replays, and it was an ok movie, but it definitely wasn't on par with the original. In total honesty, I think the first two are overrated as they were the best that had come out, but now the comic book film has better touchstones than them.

I'll see Wolverine and I have never read a comic with Deadpool in it so I don't care that he's in it, but the fact that yet another origin has been changed just shows how bad Fox handles the Marvel properties. And as far as AICN, they have been 50/50 with the film; they have been really close to Jackman, posting various emails and coming out against downloading the workprint even though they have commented on leaked stuff before.

Yeah, I don't think AICN has been too harsh on Wolverine. X3 was hated ever since they had the initial script review. I thought X3 was ok as well, and not as bad as most people say it was, but I would agree that they tried to put too much in it at such a short length. I think going with the cure story alone would have been far better, and using the time to actually build on the characters they introduced like Angel or Juggernaut rather then just have them on the side.

I'm still looking forward to Wolverine.

It's the same cut? Well, in that case, I'll likely pass on this in theaters. The workprint was a piece of shit, so I don't expect much more from the final version now.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Despite all the Internet frothing, Wolverine isn't a horrible movie. It's not very good either. Just kind of relentlessly average-to-mediocre, with some decent action sequences and a charismatic performance from Hugh Jackman. It'll make $$$ (I think about $200 mill domestic, probably about the same overseas) but it will leave absolutely no impact on audiences in the long run. It's not as unapologetically dopey as X3, but it's not as flashy either.

In other words, it's no Iron Man, Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, etc. It's a step ahead of Ghost Rider or Fantastic Four but just behind Superman Returns and even Rise of the Silver Surfer.

^So the internets should be happy that Wolverine only kinda sucked? I think the frothing is justified here. The actual rage isn't really about the quality of the film but the disrespect to characters and continuity.

I'm not even saying that. I'm just saying that the amount of "THIS MOVIE BLOWS MONKEYASS!!" reporting is IMHO ridiculous hyperbole. It's not THAT bad. It's mostly mediocre, though.

And yeah, I like Deadpool in the comics, not the BIGGEST fan, but the squandered opportunity here is unfortunate. Does the character work in the movie? Yeah, mostly. But this is like what Schumacher did with Bane in B&R. Fans of the character should be frothing at the mouth and falling over backwards. Non-fans won't give a shit; they'll just be left indifferent by a 2.5 out of 5 star movie.

Oh, and

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Sorry, but I think the shitty word of mouth this movie is likely to receive will keep it from hitting $200m.

It's not the worst thing I've ever seen, but it's so consistently unimpressive in every way that I don't see it having huge legs.

X3 was a complete and total shitburger (worse than Wolverine), and it ended up the as highest grossing of the series. (Something like $230 million? Wolverine will be completely totally frontloaded, no question. It won't hit X3 highs but I think $200m is doable.

You think Rise of the Silver Surfer and Superman Returns are better than the first Fantastic Four movie?

As far as X3, aside from them killing off so many main characters the way they did, I really had no problems with the movie.

This is where we'll agree to disagree. As bad a X3 is, it can't hold a candle to Wolverine. The adamantium-bonding scene alone is far worse than anything in X3.

To me, it already moved to the "I'm not even paying a matinee price to see it."

I'm far from alone:

Superman Returns - 77% RT, 6.7 IMDB
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - 35% RT, 5.9 IMDB
Fantastic Four - 26% RT, 5.8 IMDB

I think SR and FF:RotS are EASILY better than the FIRST Fantastic Four movie. FF was pretty freakin' BAD -- horrid acting, stupid plot, cheap, disposable, pop junk. SR was far from great and had a load of problems, but the plane rescue sequence alone was one of the greatest comic book movie scenes ever, and it had a sense of grandeur and honor that at least aspired to be something better than just another dopey comic book movie -- even if it disappointed on a number of levels. FF: RotSS was marked improvement over the original, even if it still wasn't the FF movie I've always wanted to see.

It was so freakin' DOPEY. The plot was slight, too many new characters, idiotic dialogue, scenes that made no logical sense whatsoever, (and as a fan what they did to the PHOENIX storyline was a total abortion)... that film has totally earned its shit reputation.

All IMO, of course.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

As Fox probably knows whether or not they've got a stinker on their hands with Wolverine, maybe they're being sneaky by including all the free e-movie cash to the film (as well as a couple other films) with the X-Men (and other Fox) Blu-ray (and DVD) releases.

I mean, doesn't that all count toward the box office numbers (totals?) for the film, when all is said and done, thereby inflating the popularity of the film (statistically), even though many people might have heard it was bad but still went to see it since they had "free" tickets?

Well it's not free ($5 off) that mean you still have to pay $2-$3 or more base on the time you go to see the flim.

This isn't a new tactic. All the studios like to pad up the opening weekend take in by using that movie cash trick.

If there's anyone who knows about padding, it's me.

Yeah, the plane rescue in Superman Returns was probably the only cool scene the entire movie. I was so bored with the rest of it.

As for FF, Both movies are about equal to me overall, but I just tend to lean more towrads the first one. Alba wig was better in that one.

X3 is the worst of the three no doubt, but I still find it watchable.

Add $6 here.. $11 (or maybe it's $12 now) is the norm.

Matinees are $5 near me so it'll be completely free for me except for the gas it costs to drive a few miles to the theater.
