Re: Wolverine - Solo

Two stars from Ebert. I found this interesting:

"He never says anything witty, insightful or very intelligent; his utterances are limited to the vocalization of primitive forces: anger, hurt, vengeance, love, hate, determination." Those are primitive huh? I'm gonna step out and say Ebert likes the modern passive, feminine man... (he hated 300 for the same reasons here) Wolverine is not that kind of modern man, he's a man's man, and that's why people like him. We like those "primitive" character traits because they're real and true. There I said it.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Yet he enjoyed Dirty Harry, which is clearly a model for Wolverine. He's also quite fond of James Bond, who is more civilized than Wolverine, but certainly not a feminine man.

Well, I don't know about X3, but he definetly disliked the previous two.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

He gave X2 and X3 both 3 stars, with reservations, the first one 2 1/2 which is fair in my book.

No he didn't. He gave a mixed review to the first, and positives to two and three.

EDIT: Just saw Sierra's post, durnit I should read replies first...

There's a HUGE difference between not being a "passive, feminine man" (which you claim Ebert just adores) and being a one-note caricature, a once fully realized character reduced to nothing more but stock cliche and undercooked emotional range. If grunting, fighting, sweating and scowling is what you consider being a "man's man", then you might as well just hang out at your local bathhouse.

I agree with Ebert's rating, if not quite his assessment.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

I went to a free screening. Without giving anything away I'll just say it felt very undercooked. Its an origins story and leaves so many unanswered questions. So this has been a steady decline since Singer left. I will says its a hair better than X3 which is the Return of the Jedi of the series. So This is the Phantom Menace actually more of an Attack of the Clones. I'm done with Wolverine, time to move on Marvel.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

This multiple bonus scene after the credits bit sounds like a crock of shit - How are you to know going in, which version you're seeing? If there was a way to identify the prints, then I would be more inclined to maybe go more than once at different theatres, but chances are I'd just see the same one three times = fail.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Why be upset about multiple endings after the credits? Those scenes are more like easter eggs for people who sit around for the credits, rather than hitting the door at lightning speed. I'm sure the DVD will have them all, and lots of spoilers for them on the net. Anyway got my tickets for tonight, so just waiting.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Description of the after credit scenes, spoilers:

Spoiler:
Source

Skip this paragraph if you don't want to know about X-Men Origins: Wolverine's two after-the-credits "endings,"but since that would require you to intend to go to different theaters in hopes of randomly catching both scenes, I imagine you're fine with a mere SPOILER WARNING: io9 reports that one involves Stryker getting reprimanded for his evil ways, and an amnesiac Wolverine in a bar in Japan. You'll like the second one -- apparently (and this might not be true, so please don't shit your pants) involves Wade Wilson, played by Ryan Reynolds, scouring the wreckage of the nuclear plant from the end of the film and finding the severed head of he bald/scarred/mouth-sewn-shut Deadpool/Weapon XI. Looks like the bitching worked! I think all you Deadpool fans will happily take a non-scarred Deadpool over a scarred one with swords coming out of his forearms. Also, I'd bet you anything that had the film not been leaked and Fox wasn't desperate to get nerds in theaters, they would never have made this save.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Stinkeye you are dead-on-spot on that the Fox should know that this movie is going to tank after week one.

Marvel movie-projects should have warning label like buyer beware for now on!

Intill they can grow some balls and take more control in the making of these flims enough said.

^It's not a matter of growing balls, the rights have already been sold so it's not like they have a say. 'nuff said.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Having the Marvel company instead of Fox take control isn't the answer. Getting writers and directors with actual vision is the answer.

Yeah but...Fox fucked w/ the film didn't they? Isn't that why R. Donnor had to come on set and calm things down?

You don't think Oscar-winning director Gavin Hood might have had some vision?

I thought it was such a piece of shit, that when I see anything other than a scathing review, I have to go into conspiracy mode and pretend that Fox is buying off positive reviews - it's the only way they'll make sense to me. FWIW, I didn't care for X3, and I thought this was much worse.

I don't blame Gavin Hood. He did the best he could with a complete piece of shit script. The action was mostly pretty good, it's the story that is a total mess.

I thought X3 was an unspeakable abomination and this was a slight improvement. If X3 was an F, then Wolverine is a D. And Fox might be buying off reviews, but I know Brian wasn't bought off. He's always held to his own opinions, no matter what anyone else thinks. And that's the great thing about personal taste. Not everyone has to agree with each other.

Re: Wolverine - Solo

Im not sure which thread is going to get the most traffic, so I will post my thoughts in both.

I saw it last night, and was overall entertained. There are changes that will freak out the geeks (and I was hearing it last night) but it fits in well with the story that was presented in X1-3. I would have preferred more screen time for Deadpool and Gambit, but what there was, was solid.

I did have one peeve though:
Spoiler:
Cyclops optic blast was actually heat vision like Superman, rather than energy blast, as shown in X1-3. Not sure why they made the change.

Also it was good to see
Spoiler:
Professor X. I didn't know he was in the movie.

As far as the multiple endings, we had
Spoiler:
the Japan ending, which received a lot of boo's in the audience.

So lets say this is a hit, do you think there will be an Origins 2, maybe taking place in
Spoiler:
Japan
, or a film showing Logan after X3?
