Sounds fairly simple but I guess I wouldn't expect much more from what essentially sounds like a teaser. Is Disney downplaying that this is Episode VII? It seems like most things I've seen in reference to the film so far just call it The Force Awakens which I realize is the main subtitle but the Episode number has always seemed to be part of the marketing in the past.

I've read rumors that it won't be prominent that this is Ep. VII. Like it won't be on the title but it will be in the word crawl in the beginning of the film. That's all I've heard about that part.

Yep, neither Empire nor Jedi were promoted as Episodes V and VI - at least not until much later in their home video days.

The original trilogy was Star Wars/The Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi for years. No disputing that.
As far as I know the episode titles were never featured prominently on any home video release until the original DVD releases were designed to be consistent with the already-released Episodes I and II DVDs.
The original releases and the SEs used the most-common SW/TESB/ROTJ titles. The "faces" releases used both "Star Wars" and the subtitles, but the first film emphasized "Star Wars" in large letters with the subtitle in much smaller text and the sequels reversed this, using that same small type for "Star Wars."
If you look at the prequels you'll be surprised to see that the episode number was always the biggest focus on the poster.

I guess that could make sense and I never really thought about that. The Prequel Trilogy left a bad taste with a lot of people so maybe downplaying the Sequel Trilogy as Episodes VII, VIII, and IX makes sense.

Yah, the Phantom Menace was when the episode numbers became a big deal in the marketing. For the pre-release of episode I it made sense to me because they wanted to make sure that the general public knew where the new movies fit in, but when the episode numbers ended up being the main title I was a little disappointed. The three prequels never had the iconic individual title logos that the originals had. Lucasfilm used the box-style Revenge of the Sith logo (mimicking the Return of the Jedi logo) on some stuff, but it was never really a part of the film's marketing. I know this means very little to anything in the grand scheme of things but I always try to refer to the prequels by their titles rather than their episode numbers. It makes me cringe anytime I see the originals referred to using their full "episode" titles. I'm glad Disney seems to be dropping that aspect of the marketing.

And before the episode-labeling, "Star Wars" often appeared in Empire's title just to make sure people knew what the franchise was.

Did ROTJ do the same with it's marketing?

Could be a second teaser or an unfinished edition.

I'd be totally fine with them dropping the "Episode" titles and just leaving it to the crawl.
The more to disassociate it from the prequels, the better.

Would love to see the retro titles come back, I'm just not sure how they'd be able to communicate the difference between the episode movies and the spin-offs.. or they wont. Probably similar to how Marvel is trying to bring up it's individual character movies compared to The Avengers...sell the Marvel brand (plus having big crossover actors help).
Reading the teaser descriptions, I'm surprised it might not have any shots of the original cast, since imo that's the best selling point - these are the SW movies we all wanted, the first sequel, etc. But if the teaser descriptions are correct that it does showcase the female lead more than anyone else, than I would anticipate this to be attached to the Hunger Games next wk.

You mean an SW sequel isn't a selling point enough? You don't need to show footage for a SW teaser. You just need to show that this shit is happening. That's a selling point enough. Put in the original cast and the audience blows their load sure...but you don't need them for a teaser.

I disagree...I've talked to some non-diehards over the past few months who knew there was going to be a new Star Wars movie, but had NO IDEA the original cast was returning. I think we sometimes forget that a big chunk of the potential audience doesn't keep up with pre-production the way all of us do.

Right now they are on the fence for Episode 7 (which we all know they will be there opening weekend). But you put up the first teaser and show Han, Luke and Leia, and I guarantee they will be talking about SW again like they did before the PT came out and they weren't jaded.

Yeah I know a few people who didn't even realize that a new Star Wars film is coming out let alone that the original cast is returning.
