Anyone know how far in advance Phantom Menace toys came out before the movie? This seems like a much wider gap from toy release to film release...I honestly didn't expect to see the toys until around Thanksgiving...or Halloween at the earliest.

Ditto. It also got a bigger pop than any moment from Avengers.

Episode I toy launch was May 3, 1999. Movie was May 19, so just a couple of weeks before.

Episode II toy launch was April 23, 2002. Almost a month before.

Episode III toy launch was April. . . 4 (?), 2005. Around a month and a half before.

Sweet, I've been waiting for that. Come to think of it, the previous Star Wars Vanity Fair cover with the cast fold-out may have been the last time I purchased a magazine.

No Luke on the front cover. They are going to hold that image up until the film comes out.

Daisy Ridley is a dead ringer for Natalie Portman. She has to be the daughter of Luke or
Leia.

Wonder if more than Luke's hand is robotic.

I can't tell for sure but it looks like they're in the Falcon's cockpit. If so, I don't think anyone else could fit in there and fill out another page.

Video from behind the scenes of the Vanity Fair photos. Shows Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong'o. Also John Williams and I think Lawrence Kasdan. Very cool.

Sitting in an edit bay at his Bad Robot production office and pointing to a frame of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Abrams told Vanity Fair contributing editor Bruce Handy, "I have a thought about putting Jar Jar Binks's bones in the desert there. I'm serious! Only three people will notice, but they'll love it.

EDIT: Here are the the new Vanity Fair photos:

http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/...cial_twitter#2

Dashing Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) stands alongside his trusty X-wing fighter.

J. J. Abrams directs Actress Daisy Ridley for a scene in which her character, the young heroine Rey, pilots her speeder through a bustling marketplace on the planet Jakku.

A small galaxy’s worth of tracking dots affixed to Lupita Nyong’o’s face allowed artists at Industrial Light & Magic to transform her into the C.G.I. character Maz Kanata.

Galactic travelers, smugglers, and other assorted riffraff fill the main hall of pirate Maz Kanata’s castle.

Next-generation bad guy Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) commands snowtroopers loyal to the evil First Order on the frozen plains of their secret base.

Members of the brain trust behind The Force Awakens: composer John Williams, producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, and director and co-writer Abrams, photographed at Bad Robot, Abrams’s production company, in Santa Monica.

So who is supposed to be the main character in this film? The black guy?

yeah, the imax theater was packed every seat filled and people started cheering when Lucasfilm popped on the screen.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see a trailer for Spectre

I can't express how excited I am for this movie. I just never thought they'd get it right... but I really do trust JJ has command of this project and the visuals - so far - look outstanding.

Ford will get top billing, I'm sure. It appears screen time will be pretty evenly split between Han, Finn and Rey... but I believe Boyega is credited first among the newcomers. That might be a contract thing because he's a more established actor (and a marketing strategy since Star Wars is so popular with little boys), but it sounds like Rey will end up being the "Luke" of this trilogy.

In spoiler news, MSW has a follow-up about the rescue attempt they wrote about last week:

http://makingstarwars.net/2015/05/st...-great-escape/

Spoiler:
So Rey is actually captured by Kylo Ren after the First Order's superweapon destroys Maz Kanata's castle (probably before any lightsaber duels take place). In another parallel to A New Hope, the bad guys attempt to probe her mind to obtain information -- although it sounds like Kylo uses the Darkside to do this instead of a floating orb with a syringe. Once he's inside her head, Rey is able to turn the tables and read him as well. This is where she discovers he aspires to become more powerful than Darth Vader. He discovers from her mind that he doesn't actually need Anakin's lightsaber to achieve his goals (whatever they may be) and that there is another way.

Later, Rey manages to escape through the base's ventilation shaft (sound familiar?). She then runs into Finn, Han and Chewie and seems touched they would have come to save her, but the article speculates this might just be a comedic coincidence and they actually arrived at the base on a different mission.
