Yeah I agree. Fisher gets a lot of shit but in general women in Hollywood only get their shot while they're in their primes whereas men don't have that problem as much. Couple that with Fisher's personal issues and I'm fairly impressed with how she looks for the new film. That said I still expect Leia's role to probably not be very large.

If the story, acting and direction are good then this movie might stand a chance.

She was cute in her teens and early twenties, but the older she gets, the more she looks like her father than her mother. Unfortunately. And starting to sound like him too apparently.

Spoiler:
Since Han is getting plenty of screen time and Luke is being set up for a much larger role in Episode VIII, I'm not sure it will be a big deal as long as the film is entertaining. It sounds like Leia is being used sparingly, but her place in the story makes logical sense. Not seeing Luke and Han interact will be a bit of a letdown, but I'll get over it.
I have a good feeling about the new cast members. Hopefully they will bring enough heart and charisma to their roles to make a whole new generation fall in love with Star Wars.

That I doubt. I've mentioned this before, but the synopsis sounds VERY similar to A New Hope. Whether that works or not (it seems like a lazy approach), you can't deny this storyline is trying desperately to recapture the feel of the original film:

Spoiler:
- An item vital to the plot is hidden inside a droid and sent away when the villain shows up and captures the droid's owner.

- A masked villain kills someone who refuses to give him the information he seeks.

- The droid comes across a teenager on a desert planet, causing her to become tangled in a larger conflict and sets her on a path to fulfilling a greater destiny.

- The new characters hook up with Han Solo after being pursued by the First Order who are after the droid.

- The characters end up in a bar full of pirates/scoundrels and someone loses an arm.

- The First Order demonstrate their new super weapon capable of mass destruction.

- The young heroine is captured and has her mind probed by the villain.

- The male heroes mount a rescue attempt and carry out a raid on the enemy fortress.

- The elder mentor is killed by the villain while the younger characters look on in shock.

- Much like Vader killing Obi-Wan, the new villain's motivations for the murder are personal in nature.

- Large space battle at the end.

- Masked villain squares off with the young heroes, but lives to show up in future sequels.

- We've also got a wise little alien woman who was probably a former Jedi, filling in the role Yoda left behind.

- The villain's backstory sounds like they're setting up for another Anakin-style redemption arc over the next two films.

I waited 32 years to see Luke freaking Skywalker get 5 minutes of screen time? Fuck that bullshit! Who knows if Mark Hamill will even be alive when filming of the sequel begins.

Sounds like they are using the OT characters to best serve the film, rather than just having them as your standard cameo nods. I really like the 'search for Skywalker' subplot (if true, sounds like it is)... if the next one has him in a larger role that's cool.

If that's the way they're going w/ it. It sounds like they're properly establishing a mythology for these characters to live in and feel more natural for the drama. I just want a good movie. i don't give a fuck if Luke is a tease in this film for the rest of the films coming after narratively.

The problem is that we are at the 7th installment in this franchise, so how original can the story really be at this point? Don't get me wrong, I loved the 2nd teaser like most of the fanbase but I still don't believe this movie will ever rival The Original Star Wars or The Empire Strikes Back.

I haven't read any spoilers but I am assuming someone turns to the darkside who will be our villain, and some Skywalker/Solo kid will be the Protagonist and we will follow their journey for 3 movies while we see lightsaber battles, space battles, the force, etc. Sounds like familiar territory to me.

I kind of look at Rocky 6 as a model for what may come of the new Star Wars movie. You had Rocky & Paulie 30 years after the original movie, and it was a good movie. Was it great? No, simply because its impossible to recreate that magic because you are recycling similar themes from the original and that is usually why sequels and prequels are mostly inferior. Rocky 6 had a good story, good acting, and good direction, but it wasn't a great movie. It was enjoyable and redeemed the franchise after the horrible Rocky 5, so I think the ST can redeem the franchise after the PT in that respect.

Judging from the fanbase and the amount of Star Wars material out there, I'd say somewhat. Not that the original Star Wars had a particularly original story, though for the time the setting definitely was.

Comparing Rocky to Star Wars? Rocky was a story about one guy. Star Wars can really be about anything in that universe. I'm not saying any of these new movies will be great, but it's not really the same thing.

I see what you're saying, but I was just using the comparison to Rocky because the time passage in years between the original and the last sequel. It's one of the few movies where you had the original actors play in the franchise 30 years apart.

Godfather I to Godfather III was 18 years.

Rocky 1 to Rocky 6 was 30 years.

The Hustler to The Color of Money was 25 years.

I agree but in some ways it is still a bit of a downer as the fact that the original cast was returning was a pretty big selling point for the film. I get the sense that for Original Trilogy characters we'll mostly see Han and Chewie in action in the film. Probably R2D2 and C3PO too. I mostly was interested for Luke so if he's not in this one much it does sort of suck but if he's a bigger part of Episodes VIII and IX I won't be too upset.

Let's keep in mind that originally the OT actors had little more than cameos in this new trilogy...it was JJ that wanted to expand their roles and make them a bigger part of the story.

Cameo's would have been a total insult to the fans, especially if they marketed them heavily before the movie the same way Lucas marketed Suited Vader yet he was only in Episode 3 for a few minutes.

I give JJ & Kathleen Kennedy credit as they have not really marketed these movies with the OT characters, and they are clearly telling us that the new characters will be the main stars. I am not one for spoilers but I think its better if the fanbase knows that Luke, Leia and Han are playing minor roles (even if they are relevant to the plot) so fans don't expect more screentime from them.

Agreed. I wasn't expecting them to necessarily be the main stars but at first I expected that they'd have a somewhat large role in the film alongside the new cast and that the film would basically be a passing of the torch. You can't tell me that they don't know that by saying the Original Trilogy cast is returning that they don't know there's bound to be some people who will be disappointed if they don't have a decent role. I still have a lot of faith in the film at this point but I won't say that it isn't disappointing to have most of the original cast in limited roles from the sounds of things.

If they are gonna kill Han, Id prefer if they did it like in Carlitos Way. Have Han be in some major dangerous situation and as he thinks he is about to get away, Greedo's grandson steps out from nowhere and shoots him.
