Love the argument that Return of the Jedi isn't a standalone movie. The only standalone Star Wars movie was the first one of the original trilogy. I don't get the idea of trashing a movie for what it could have been, rather than what it is, as if we'd know the movie would be good with said changes. It more or less accomplished a way to end the series that is satisfying to fans. And hating on Ewoks? That is some revisionist stuff, as if they were equivalent to a JarJar Binks character. Hey, it gave little people some acting jobs, and notably Warwick Davis his start. And it has good action and funny bits. The Special Edition changes were dumb, and I'm glad I have good copies of the unaltered original trilogy, though I wish they'd get a proper release on Blu ray and/or Ultra Blu ray at this point.

Nothing revisionist about ewok hate. People have been bashing them from day one.

That's why, despite not being very good movies, there were 2 Ewok movies made, because people hated Ewoks in general. That makes no sense to make movies about them, unless, uh, people liked them. They even had a cartoon series. I don't remember JarJar getting any sort of attention like that; he was almost universally despised, or at the very least one of the more annoying characters in Star Wars history.

Trust me most of my older brothers friends never saw the Prequels or even cared about them in 1999 (They will probably see TFA cause Han, Luke, and Leia are back). It was kids my age who beared the torch of the SW fandom that kept it going years later.

Depends on which age group your talking about. I was 10 years old when I saw ROTJ, and didn't notice the Ewoks being lame until I was in high school. But man my older brothers friends (who were in High School when ROTJ came out) hated the movie and the Ewoks. The difference was there was no internet back then so people who didn't like the movie moved on.

My fiancee (34) just watched ROTJ with me and liked the Ewoks. ![Shrug](/images/smilies/shrug.gif)
Of course, she also found Yoda's speech patterns annoying and laughed at Salacious P. Crumb every time, so I'm not sure how much weight I can give her opinions.

Personally I'm just kind of indifferent to the Ewoks. They aren't my favorite part of the film but I also don't hate them like so many do. They were cutesy characters thrown in more for kids more than likely but they weren't all that bad in my opinion. They're far more tolerable than Jar Jar who was a much larger character in The Phantom Menace and really while they're present in the film they aren't really a big part of it.

All I remember is my sister crying like a bitch when that one Ewok bit the dust. And I remember thinking after all that fighting only one Ewok died? That's bullshit.

They were cute, but they were going to cook the heroes alive and eat them.

Random aside, but remember in Star Wars when 3PO told a dejected Luke that despite having been a witness to the rebellion, he wasn't a good storyteller, and provided no further info?
And then in Jedi he proceeds to give the Ewoks a full play by play of the first two movies, complete with sound effects? What a dick.

Drive her out to the country and leave her on the side of the road.

I would have been largely ok with Ewoks if a more realistic number had died in the battles with the stormtroopers. I'm thinking 25,000 would be about right.

Let me reiterate my theory that Jakku is what's left of Endor after seven hundred billion tons of Death Star debris rained down upon it.

And as far as it being unrealistic of the Ewoks defeating storm troopers I guess we all have to forget that a few people were able to outgun a bunch of storm troopers in the first Death Star. Also, their armor was horrible for protection against blasters. Their armor looks like it's made of plastic. But that's really being nitpicky, much like the whole Ewok thing. I liked the fact that the Emperor didn't think to take out the Ewoks when they build the shield generator on Endor. You think the Empire would have ran into them at one point or another.

We Finally Have George Lucas’ Own Reaction to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’
Posted on Tuesday, December 8th, 2015 by Ethan Anderton
Over the weekend, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that just six days after George Lucas said he hadn’t seen a single frame of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the creator of the sci-fi universe had finally seen the film. In addition, she told us that “he liked it.” But now we finally have word from the man himself, kinda.
Find out about this George Lucas The Force Awakens reaction after the jump!
On Sunday, Vulture caught up with Lucas on the red carpet at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony in Washington D.C., where the filmmaker was being honored for his lifetime achievements in arts and culture. It’s just a quick take from Lucas, but when asked what he thought about the movie, this is what he said:
I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.
Well, that’s a bit different from just liking it. While it’s likely that he did tell Kathleen Kennedy and maybe J.J. Abrams that he enjoyed the film, this reaction from Lucas is a bit more telling. Basically, he’s saying that this is the movie Star Wars fans have wanted for a while, but it’s not the movie that he would have made (obviously).
However, if you look back at what Lucas recently said about his divorce from Star Wars after Disney bought Lucasfilm, this could be a slight dig at the film. Lucas recently talked to Vanity Fair about he and Disney going their separate ways when the studio was not interested in the direction he wanted to take the Star Wars saga:
The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans.’ People don’t actually realize it’s actually a soap opera and it’s all about family problems – it’s not about spaceships. So they decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, ‘Fine.’
Lucas seems to indicate that fans just want spaceship action and lightsaber fights without the family problems that drive the story and actually give it substance and an emotional core. But if that’s true, then most fans probably would have loved the prequels. Fans have just been looking for something that is more in tune with the spirit of the original films, and so far it seems like that’s what director J.J. Abrams will deliver.
We can’t really slight Lucas for giving this kind of reaction to The Force Awakens though. After all, he also recently said this about leaving Star Wars behind:
When you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls. The second rule, you don’t go over to their house and drive by to see what they’re doing. The third one is you don’t show up at their coffee shop and say you are going to burn it… You just say ‘Nope, gone, history, I’m moving forward.’
And when you break up with somebody, and they get a new significant other, you’re not immediately going to say they’re a great person. You’re going to say, “Well, I’m just glad you’re happy.” Hopefully Star Wars fans really will be happy when The Force Awakens finally hits theaters for the first time in just 9 days.

I loved the Ewoks as a kid, including those awful movies. I don't hate them now, I even kind of like them, but it does irk me when they whip a couple of stones into the storm troopers and they fall over. I can live with the rest of their primitive contraptions.
