Impressions from the premier are generally positive. The negatives seem to be from the die hard TLJ lovers but overall most are saying it’s the ultimate Star Wars movie if not quite the best one.
I'm preparing myself for a good movie, but not the best. It can only go up from there.

The only reason I am contemplating seeing this on the big screen is because I have seen them all on the big screen. This new trilogy was just a big waste of time.

I expect it to be thoroughly mediocre, only because all of JJ's movies have only ever been thoroughly mediocre - he can't seem to rise above that threshold - but on the plus side, he doesn't seem to go below it either, which keeps him from making thoroughly terrible movies.

Ron Howard is a much better director than JJ Abrams, as his resume isn't littered with reboots from successful franchises. You can say that Ron Howard plays it safe with his movies, but he has some classics like Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind and Cocoon that were Oscar Nominated. Even movies like Splash, Gung Ho, and Night Shift are solid comedies. JJ Abrams resume is mostly filled with Star Wars, Mission Impossible and Star Trek, all franchises that he rebooted.

I've noticed in the last few years that Star Wars fans have become so divided and sometimes borderline toxic.
If you love these new movies, you're a shill, fanboy, easy to please, you have no credibility.
If you hate it, you're some uptight asshole with an agenda or hate everything from Disney. They've ruined your childhood.
Or oh no, this is not the Star Wars movie that was scripted in my head, so it sucks.
I don't understand why the "fans" take these movies so personally. I would never attack or insult someone for liking or not liking these movies. Like when someone hates it, it's almost like some people get personally offended like they spit on your movie. And then when someone loves it, they also get attacked for being a fanboy shill who loves everything and has zero critical eye for these movies. Simply can't please everyone.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to Thursday.

^That's not just Star Wars, though. You see the same kinds of attitudes among the fandom of many franchises. Star Wars is just bigger/more widespread than most, so it does seem to stand out.

I've heard two things about the movie from someone who has seen it (take this for what it's worth, if anything):
1) It basically all-but-ignores The Last Jedi
2) If you're a JJ Abrams fan, you'll love it.

^ Someone I know who saw it basically said it ignores a lot of things from all of the previous films; ignores some of the Lucas-era world-building, character stuff etc.
Shit, this might be an actual dud.
Quality-wise, not box office. It's going to rake in all the money regardless of what people think.

I have not read spoilers but I really hope this movie doesn't ignore what was established in previous movies. I actually am an Abrams fan and certainly have not agreed with the direction all of these films have taken but it would annoy me if things from previous movies were just changed or ignored, that is lazy and bad story telling.

It sounds like that’s exactly what they did from the reviews I’ve read.

As long as they don’t go back to casino world it can’t be all bad.
Hmm maybe be retcons where the blue milk comes from.

Uh oh, reviews are trickling in and, so far, it looks to be the worst reviewed SW film yet - neck & neck with Phantom Menace. With most agreeing it is one of the worst dialog/script the films have ever had.

If it has worse dialogue than the prequels, than they have really accomplished something. I can't imagine how such a thing would even be possible. "I hate sand!" "Anakin, you're breaking my heart!" "Noooooo!!!!!" "Meesa in deep doo-doo!"
