Re: what shows are you thinking of quitting?

I'm surprised to see Detroit 187. Coming from someone who loves the Wire, I totally understand how cookie-cutter this show is...but for some reason I'm really drawn in. Very likeable characters and a really interesting tone. This is actually the only new show that I still watch and actually look forward to.

Desperate Housewives is on the chopping block right now. Supernatural is getting close as well.

Re: what shows are you thinking of quitting?

I'm staying with Supernatural just because I want it to be done this season, and I don't think I'd return if the show came back next season in the fall. DH is also on the chopping block (only have it on to fold laundry since we're in a lull of original programming on TV at the moment).

2013: TV Shows you've given up on already

with 4 children under 5 years old, a career, and other interests my TV watching hours are at a premium. This year I've given up on:

The Mentalist, Bones, Ripper Street, CSI, and Continuum.

Suffering through The Office just out of obligation. The Following and Vikings is on the bubble.

The only shows that I really go out of my way to watch:

Spartacus, The Walking Dead, Nikita, Parks & Rec, and Being Human (USA).

Vikings is on the bubble after just one episode? How long do you give a show before you give up on it?

Typically, if a show doesn't straight up turn me off after the first episode, I'm going to stick with it a while.

Continuum (watched 1 ep) and The Following (2.5). Vikings has plenty of time to improve for me.

Girls didn't even get one watch this season.

Community again not one watch.

Honestly, at this point I prefer to watch mindless stuff like House Hunters than much of the stuff I used to watch in prime time.

Yeah, I seem to having Food TV and HGTV on in the background a lot since I don't really have to pay attention to them.

It's weird.

Once Upon A Time

I didn't hate what I was watching but I had 6 episode saved up on the DVR with no desire at all to watch so I deleted them.

I don't give up on sitcoms all that easily but House of Lies and Californication are on the brink. Both have been pretty bad but I'm still finding time to watch them just because I can have it on while doing other things and not really miss much.

Re: 2013: TV Shows you've given up on already

Shows piling up for me:

Once Upon A Time
CSI:LV
The Following
The Americans
Supernatural
The Vampire Diaries
Hart of Dixie
Elementary

Beauty and the Beast (just sampled one episode, really).
Revenge is on the chopping block because the narrative thrust is so scattershot this season.

I felt like the most shallow person when I started watching just because I thought Dennings was attractive, but after three or four episodes, I gave up. I just thought the show was terrible.

Re: 2013: TV Shows you've given up on already

Forgot about Once Upon a Time, Nikita, Vampire Diaries. Green Arrow is starting to pile up but I haven't punted it yet like the others. I have 16 episodes of Gossip Girl sitting on the DVR and no desire to watch them.

At this point show that I make it a point to watch every week:
Survivor
Amazing Race
The Americans
Big Bang Theory (not really a time commitment)
Moonshiners (season is over)

Thats it. I used to watch so many shows but I just don't have it in me anymore. So much HGTV stuff on the DVR that I can just put on instead of actually commiting to watch something.

4 children under 5? Do you have a set of twins in there?

Dropped

Arrow - We really liked it, but the 3rd or 4th episode was all messed up (Sound issues). Had recorded about 12 more episodes, realized we were too far behind, and just deleted the remaining. Might revisit if it is on Demand during the Summer.

Elementary - We liked it enough, caught first 2-3 episodes, but we really don't like episodic TV, but tend to like Serialized TV more

American Idol - We dropped out after hollywood round last year, this year we just never came back.

Picked up:

Revolution - Loved the kind of TV show (Post Apocolyptic), It was kind of dumb, but we wanted to find out the mystery.

Catfish - The Wife saw the documentary that inspired the TV Show, Honestly it was very interesting, we will be back for season two

Vikings - Recorded the first episode, looked very interesting, I have a feeling we will watch the whole thing.

Already on the Schedule:

Game of Thrones - I'm the HUGE fan (and book reader), wife enjoys it for Tyrion (non-book reader)

True Blood - Wife is the HUGE fan, I watch along with her and enjoy it.

Grimm - We both like this show, hoping it comes back for season 3

Once Upon a Time - We both like this show, but this is starting to get into LOST territory with all the craziness.

Glee - Wife is into this show more than I am, I watch mainly to see if there are any interesting songs/mashups

New Girl, Raising Hope - We both enjoy New Girl much more than Raising Hope, but Raising Hope is also really good.

Homeland - Big Time Fan of this, Wife watches along with some interest

Dexter - We Both really into this, however, we are only at season 3 at the moment. Summer time we will be able to catch up

Most of the dramas that we watch are serialized sci-fi/fantasy.

True Blood. My wife and I were faithful devotees, but we only made it 4 episodes into the last season and suddenly found better things to do. Ugh.

The only real "bubble" show right now is Revolution. They simply need more interesting main characters, as Sullen Girl, Piss Boy, Bearded Nerdguy, Feisty Latina, and Super Uncle are all colossal bores. The villains -- Sadistic Conflicted Black Guy, General Blondefro , and Twisted Mommy -- are much more interesting.

I gave Vegas a try and barely made it through that first episode. Absolutely atrocious writing.

American Idol.

I've watched every season since season 2, but I just don't have it in me anymore to devote 2-4 hours a week on it,

I still do watch The Voice and will watch it when it returns later this month.

For those who are behind on Arrow, It's one of the best new shows this season. You're really missing out sitting on it. I make it a point to watch it every week.

And TallGuyMe, seriously Vikings after 1 episode?

I'm more than a little predisposed to love Arrow, as I've been a 'Green Arrow' fan for 30+ years (ever since he appeared on the Superfriends; I've always been into archers/archery), but I was expecting to hate it given (1) the CW Tweenie Sheen that infects every show on that network and (2) Greg Berlanti's involvement, who's previous work had all been notable for their craptacularness.

But it's been very solid, very well done. Much more serialized than Smallville, plenty of back-story that's just as compelling (if not moreso) than the modern storyline, good plotting, and, yes, dozens of Easter Eggs for DC/Green Arrow faithful who tune in every week ("Meet me on the corner of O'Neill & Adams!" "I thought you were in Bludhaven." etc.)

It's not the Green Arrow I grew up reading, but it's a really great take on the character. Yes, it does have a bit of that CW Tweenie Sheen, but it's not too intrusive or annoying. I even got my wife really enjoying Arrow, and she couldn't care less about Green Arrow / superhero shows. She was always more of a Marvel girl anyhow. It's like we come from two different worlds...

For the comics/Green Arrow/DC crowd so far we've had, what, Deadshot, Firefly, Count Vertigo, Deathstroke / Slade Wilson, Eddie Fyres, China White, The Huntress, Merlyn, The Royal Flush Gang, Speedy, and (potentially) Black Canary. Of course these are all-new takes on the characters/concepts, but they've worked better than they had any right to.

EDIT: I had no idea Felicity Smoak was based on a pre-existing DC character, but apparently she was.

Arrow was in danger of getting dropped by me early on, but the action/90210 ratio has picked up a lot in the last 2, 3 eps and now I look forward to it.

I could honestly do without Revolutuion but I'm going to give it thru S1. It's a real chore though.
