According to the showrunner, it was a creative decision to kill her off. He says it will have an impact on all the characters.
Also, IMO she was really underused so far through 16 episodes. I thought this was the best episode that she was involved in.
I'm enjoying The Rookie so much more than the final 2 seasons of Fillion's last show Castle. I really hope it gets renewed.

Yeah, that sucks. I really liked her, though I agree she was underused. Was hoping that would change.
I expect she will be replaced by a more hard-nosed character as captain. Since the sergeant has softened up a bit, they need someone more antagonistic toward Nolan in the show.

Yeah i was shocked, but she was a fringe character.

Until Sarah Shahi showed up to be a new love interest for Nolan, I wondered if they were going to go there with the captain since the show did so little with her character.

I'm glad they nipped in the bud quick "it's his fault she got killed". If even some of the characters blamed Nolan, that would have sucked

I was surprised they killed her off too. Great episode. This reminds me a lot of Castle in that they balance the humor and drama really well.

I kind of thought they were pulling our collective leg with the new Captain. That was mildly amusing, but would have gotten old and annoying really quickly.
As for the rest of the episode, it was another good one. The twist with the guy in protective custody was good, and the earthquake was pretty realistic (not the end of the world level disaster that most movies and TV shows show).
I'm surprised the show hasn't found a larger audience, because it is really well written and acted.
Oh, and I don't know if you caught this, but they retconned Nolan's age. He's 45. At the start of the season he was 40. I know a job like that can really age you, but WOW!![Wink](/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I don't even know if a 44 year old could get hired by the LAPD. (I know the CA Highway Patrol still had an age limit of 39 for rookies entering their academy no more than 20 years ago, but I don't know if the LAPD has a similar age cutoff.) Still, artistic license and all...

There is no upper age limit for recruits. There used to be one that was set at 40 but they dropped that almost twenty years ago due to an age discrimination complaint.

There must have been some blowback from fans on his age. And now that he's 45, it makes his relationship with the other rookie even more creepy. Glad that sub-plot appears to be over.

I can see them promoting the Sarge to the new captain and Tim promoted to the new Sarge..

My wife said the same thing about Gray being made captain. Didn't think about a new sarge though. Cop shows usually don't have both ranks as major characters (Brooklyn 99 being an exception).

We were several episodes behind, but I saw a non-spoiler headline ona big shakeup so I assumed something was afoot. I was really shocked by the fate of the captain. I did appreciate they started the episode with a seemingly light tone (per usual), but quickly brought back up he state of affairs. The show does do a good job of creating an underlying world and characters. The vice cop Nolan’s partner saved, Tim’s wife, the lawyer/boyfriend are good examples.
I agree it seems like the Sergeant ant will become the captain and Tim the sergeant, but that almost seems like too tidy a bow. I’m hoping they add in a cast member or two.
I’m wonder if something will come up with Jackson by the finale. That prisoner a few episodes back implied quite a lot about his dad...
Also, not liking the FBI agent angle. Something just seems very off about the whole thing. Hopefully they don’t pull Nolan to go on some FBI recruit thing as a back door spinoff. Reminds me of the whole Castle PI storyline late in the run.

Last week's earthquake episode was pretty good. And Joel McHale was good playing a douchebag. It was nice seeing Sarah Shahi back even though she didn't do much.

Tonight's episode was well done, overall, but the drama with Bishop and her foster brother felt a little forced. It kind of feels like there's been enough, "The cop's in trouble and going before the review board/arbitration judge," thing already this season, but the next episode is going to be focused on that kind of story again.
Still, I enjoyed this episode a lot, and I'm sure I'll like the next one. I just really like the show and the characters, overall, and the episodes have been well written and acted.

This show has really grown into its own over the season. I’ve enjoyed but been a bit meh. The wife only half paid attention early on, but has even changed to wanting to watch the next episode quickly.
I do agree the Talia part seemed out of nowhere. But she has been a quite character.
I wish they’d have spent more time on fallout from the Captains death. Maybe it will come up in the final two episodes.
Hopefully the show gets a second season. I think the stories could be very interesting, between building off this season and mixing things up.

The show has been getting better but I was really soured by the pilot and it hasn't gotten better enough for me to continue.

Yeah, that makes no sense. "I've been watching, and the show continues to get better, but not enough so I'm dropping out after investing several months in these characters and stories."
Huh, indeed.
Personally, I liked it from the beginning (despite the flaws in the first 2 or 3 episodes), but it HAS gotten better. It improved a lot over the first few episodes, and continued to get a little better as the show has gone along since then.

I really liked this episode. The rookies trying to get those boxes checked (I can see a bureaucratic thing like that happening), Nolan's friend getting carjacked, and then Bishop's meeting with the Chief - it was great stuff.
Now, is it just me, or does the offer made to Bishop seem like a test? I have a funny feeling that it is - but I could be wrong.
This show will definitely be rewatchable. Maybe not as much as Castle, but I'm looking forward to watching this season again on DVD down the line.

Was the previous under cover cop serving as acting Captain? It seemed like he was at least using the Captain’s old office. However, he was out in the field on the busts.

I thought it was funny those car thieves had a fake '62 Ferrari GTO sitting in their warehouse. It was a worthless POS Datsun 280Z. Stupid idiots.
