I can't imagine paying $250 for the system, $50 for each game, and then on top of all of that $150 for a 1.0GB memory card. It just blows my mind that some people have done that.

Oh but how I want to play that puzzle game!

When I was in WalMart today, I actually thought about buying one for a second, since I got some cash to spend on whatever recently, but I remembered the deal about the dead pixels. Before I get one I want to make sure that all problems are dealt with.

While I was there, mainly just looking to see how many they had in stock (the case here was almost totally full, but Seneca, SC isn't really the biggest city) a mother and her 13 year old son was looking at them also. I believe it was his birthday, and she was going to buy him a gift, and he wanted a PSP. They didn't know the price of the PSP or anything, and a CSR was helping them out. He said the system itself is $250, and then you need to buy games, maybe a better memory card, and all of that stuff. She then said to her son "Good lord, by the time it's over we'll need to spend almost $400 before you can be up and going with this thing. You better think of something else you want."

Her son wasn't upset, he was just as shocked. I can see this being a huge problem all over the country though. There is a lot of money involved if you really want to get the best out of the PSP at this time.
That's ridiculous. $250 plus $40 for one game is ALL you need to be "up and running".

1.Show me something else that does all of this for $250.
2.Most games are $40.
3.The 1 GB stick is pushing it, but you can use it on other products as well.

I'm not complaining about it or putting it down, I just can't imagine doing all of that just for a handheld system, that's all. That's a lot of money, especially if someone doesn't plan on using the video features. My point is that by having all of this, at such high prices, it could possibly cause problems because many people will not want to pay this much, especially parents.

Many people would buy it no matter what the cost, so whatever.

1. GamePark, N-Gage (plays MP3s, can rip movies, emulators)
2. I wouldn't say MOST. Maybe half/Half between $40/$50

Ya who the hell gets multi hundred dollar gifts as birthday presents. Hell on the radio today there was an ad for Gamestop that said come in and buy the easter gift everyone is looking for. The PSP! It's so small it will fit right in with the Peeps! Who's going to spend $300 on an easter gift for their fricken kid? Bill Gates? I must be borderline poverty level if everyone else can afford that.

Got to see one of these things close up and I just had to have one. Went to GameRush tonight and traded in some games and DVDs and used up what store credit I had left. Ended up walking out with a PSP and only spent $2 and change. Didn't get a game with it, but I'm thinking I will pick up Lumines tomorrow.

So far I have tried out encoding movies which look amazing, photos which also look great and it is fully compatible with the Sony Connect software I already have so I tried out the music features and was impressed again.

The 32mb stick isn't going to cut it though. I don't know when I will have the extra money, but I'm going to have to get a 1GB stick for it soon.

I do have one dead pixel though it isn't the biggest deal the more I use the unit. The guys at GameRush told me they were told by the Sony Rep not to take back anymore PSP units with dead pixels, but that Sony would take care of the repairs if I wanted them to. I have no idea if any of this is true. However, it is becoming obvious the dead pixel thing is a very, very widespread problem.

SCEA downplays widespread reports of LCD screen problems, says warranty is still in effect and defective units can be exchanged.

Soon after the PSP launched in Japan last December, reports began to surface that some units' LCD screens suffered from pixels that were either permanently light or dark. Within 24 hours of the portable's North American launch, similar complaints began to reverberate around the Internet. The locus of the complaints was, ironically, the official PlayStation forums, which was temporarily down yesterday following heavy traffic.

Some gamers' outrage over the perceived issue was fueled by an e-mail allegedly sent out by Canadian game retailer Video Games Plus. The e-mail said the company was "informed by Sony that they will not be warranting any dead pixel units. They are only warranting hardware defects ie [sic] broken buttons, malfunction with drive, and so on."

An informal survey of the dozen-odd PSPs in the GameSpot offices found half had at least one pixel that stayed white or dark constantly. While these dots were almost all invisible while playing games, they did stand out when displayed against a black or white screen.

While commonly referred to as a "defect," Sony says the off-colored pixel problem is common in all LCD screens. "A very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels is normal for LCD screens, and is not a sign of a malfunction," a representative for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) told GameSpot.

Page 13 of the PSP manual puts it this way: "Red, blue, or green spots (bright spots) or black spots (dark spots) may appear in certain locations on the LCD screen. The appearance of such spots is a normal occurrence associated with LCD screens and not a sign of malfunction. LCD screens are made using highly precise technology. However, a very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels exist on each screen." The manual also warns against exposing the LCD screen to direct sunlight and leaving still images on the screen for an extended period of time, as both could damage the display.

The Sony rep suggested that PSP owners who encounter the pixel issue should try the device "for a week or two" to see if it continues to bother them. "If you find the spots are interfering with gameplay/video viewing during this period, we will support the various elements of [the PSP] warranty," the rep said. Each PSP comes with a one-year limited warranty, which is on page 125 of the PSP manual. If a PSP is "determined to be defective" by SCEA, the company will see to the "repair or replacement of this product [the PSP] with a new or refurbished product at SCEA's option."

According to a technical support associate contacted by GameSpot, PSP owners who encounter a persistent and aggravating dead-pixel issue should contact SCEA's customer service line (1-800-345-7669) for instructions on how to exchange their unit after a week or two of using the unit. "We will work with you," he assured. The associate said the process would work much like exchanging PlayStation 2s that suffer from the dreaded "Disc Read Error" problem: Gamers will mail their PSPs in to SCEA and receive units with new screens. The associate was unsure if customers would receive an all-new unit or their old unit with a new LCD screen.

Not a great game system, but as a phone the N-Gage QD is pretty good.

I now own the PSP, DS, Tapwave Zodiac 2 and the N-Gage. I will pass on the Gizmondo though. I think I've done all I can to support the current handheld gaming machines.

Well I picked up my PSP yesterday morning. Got home and charged it up. Watched Spiderman 2, which looks absolutely amazing on this, and then played a little Ridge Racers. Other than Ridge Racers I picked up Lumines, Untold Legends, and Wipeout Pure but I only played around with RR.

So this morning I get up and go to play and it won't load up RR..doesn't even recognize the disc. So I pop it out and put it in again and still nothing. Grab Spiderman 2, pop it in and the drive is just not reading the umd's. It pissed me off because I declined the option on the extended warranty....so I call the place I got it from and luckily they had one PSP left to sell. The guy held it for me until I got there and they swapped it out....this time I bought the extended warranty. I also exchanged Wipeout Pure for Tiger Woods, which they didn't have yesterday. Waiting for the damn thing to charge up so I can play it again.

My only 2 gripes with the system so far and will continue to be is the battery life and the glossy finish on the front. I almost wish they would have used the same material thats on the back on the front. Other than those 2 things the PSP kicksass.

I picked up Lumines today, but I don't want to open it up yet until my PSP arrives next week. I see on the back of the box that you can play wirelessly with friends. Is that just local wireless, or can you play it over the Internet? Anybody try yet?

I'm sure it is but I already had a racing game in RR and was wanting something a little different. I wish Hot Shots would have been available at launch but Tiger Woods will do for now.

my friend bought 2 games, got $10 giftcard and $5 off each game, he gave my the give card (i paid him $10 back cash), so basicly he paid $30 for each game

I'm still on the fence (albeit quite tempted after seeing a huge display at my Target which still has about 30 PSPs left) due to the dead pixel issue (and Sony's expected, yet obnoxiously denial-ridden PR response) and the lack of any exclusive great games that appeal to me. I'll probably end up caving sometime around 10 this morning, but I'll feel guilty for a while about it.

Let me give you a personal experience with "dead pixels" before you let it bother you. My sister's laptop LCD screen had 4 pixels which were always black. I got a great deal on it, so I wasn't really worried about it. A few months later, I noticed that the pixels were no longer black and that they were working perfectly. I have seen many reports how a broke pixel won't fix, but these 4 did. Sorry, I didn't think to take pics.

I don't know how you can say the PSP has a lack of exclusive games. The top games on the PSP (minus TH) are all PSP exclusives. Lumines, Ridge Racers (not the same as the DS version at all), WipeOut Pure, and Twisted Metal.

I've owned many PDAs, so dealing with dead or stuck pixels is nothing new for me. In my experience the ones that get stuck on white never fix themselves. My old Clie ended up with two of them and they were like that for two years up until I sold it and the one on my DS is still stuck on white. If you get pixels that are stuck on white just get used to them because odds are they will stay that way.

As far as the launch lineup, it is a decent lineup, but honestly none of the good games appeal to me besides Lumines. Twisted Metal, WipeOut and Ridge Racers are rentals in my book. I'm probably going to get one of those Blockbuster game passes so I can play through most of the PSP lineup, but none of the games are ones I would pay 40-50 dollars for except Lumines. There is some stuff I'm interested in on the way though.
