I've tried the tg16 and snes emus. Both worked fine, but the snes seemed to be at like 60% speed. From what I've read, MAME only supports 4 games right now, so I didn't bother trying that.

I know its probably already been mentioned but do I need a Japanese PSP in order to use the emulators or can I use the US one I bought in March?

As long as you didn't update your firmware level to 1.51 or 1.52, you should be fine.

Nope haven't updated it yet. Thanks for the info.

Ok now as far as memory cards go. I see the SanDisk 1gb pro duos going for $100 on ebay. Is that the best deal going?

NES and the TG16 emu run perfectly in my opinion. I loved playing Neutopia again (Zelda clone...but done VERY well) and not having to dig out my TG16

I wonder how long it will be before PSP games start requiring you to upgrade your firmware to work. I'm betting the firmware upgrades will start getting built into games to try and stop the hacks that are going on. Considering that the PSP sales are sluggish Sony would be better off leaving things alone though.

I believe they are already doing that in Japan. It's reported though, that you can't update the firmware without plugging the unit into the wall, so it shouldn't be able to update it without you knowing about it.

I tried the NES and Genesis EMU last night....NES ran great. The genesis one ran ok at 333MHZ, but I was afraid to overclock the PSP and fry it. IT did not seem that stable either.

What EMU games do people recommend? NES or otherwise....

Also, Coded Arms is SUPPOSED to make you update your firmware when it ships.

Have you seen sales numbers posted? The only ones I say were from the launch.

333mhz isn't overclocking the CPU. It is a 333mhz CPU so it was designed to run that fast.

I've read reports that people smelled burning when running at 33MHZ for too long....I can wait. I like my NES. Any good TG16 games?

Its definitely a 333MHz processor which is currently underclocked to preserve battery power. I also suspect that Sony will introduce a new battery and remove the limiter right before Nintendo releases the successor to GBA.

Military Madness for the TG16 is pretty good.

I'm not sure how much we can suggest roms here. But then again, the mods don't seem to have problems with the MAME rom thread, and the TG16 is a pretty much dead platform (that no one is trying to milk with re-releases)

I like:
Blazing Lasers (awesome vertical shooter)
Neutopia 1 & 2 (clones of Zelda)
Alien Crush & Devils Crush (pinball)
Splatterhouse is kind of fun
Bonk's Adventure

There are too many good PC-Engine (TG16) games to list.

Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
Bikkuriman World (aka Wonder Boy in Monster Land)
Dragon's Curse
Dynastic Hero
Ys I & II
Ys III
Ys IV
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
Spriggan
Spriggan Mark 2
Xak I & II
Xak III
Fray in Magical Adventure (aka Xak Gaiden)
Parasol Stars
Tower of Druaga
Legend of Valkyrie
Popful Mail
Madou Monogatari
Sapphire
Star Solider
Super Star Solider
Solider Blade
Star Parodia
Marchen Maze
Kaizou Ningen Shubibinman 3
Mahjong Sword Princess Quest Gaiden
New Adventure Island

I could go on and on and on..

Do to the success of the DS I don't suspect we will see another portable from Nintendo for at least 2-3 years, at twhich point Sony will be ready to sell another handheld as well.

Nintendo has been very clear that "the DS is not the successor to the GBA" and that they would "have a successor to the GBA in 2006/7". Being that they release a new handheld roughly every two years, 2006 looks like the winner. That could change, but as of right now I'm going to go on with what Nintendo has said about the issue in the past.

I don't know why people have such a hard time taking what Nintendo says seriously.

Because Nintendo probably didn't expect the DS to sell as well as it has. Now they have no need to rush out another portable as the DS is more than holding it's own against the PSP (due mainly to each focusing on very different markets).

I agree, they'd be smart to turn a blind eye to it. Hear no evil, see no evil.

Looks like they're not smart, then. It's coming with Coded Arms, July 6th:

This image is from the import version of Coded Arms... I guess it's possible they took the firmware update out of the US version.

It's kind of odd....what if you have NO WAY to update your firmware? I don't have a USB cable for PSP-PC. I just copy everything to my memory stick via a MS reader.

If they make the common user HAVE to go out and buy a USB cable or a wireless router, then Sony better give me some money back.

The firmware update is on the UMD. You buy the game, try to play it, and it says you can't without the update. There's a new "update software" option on your PSP when you have the game in. You click on it, it does it's thing, and then you play the game.

I'd imagine if they did that they would put the firmware update on games that required it.

Though that doesn't explain the screen above.
