All Xbox 360 games will have Xbox Live Silver support which will be awesome for people who like single player games. You will be able to look at someone else's achievement record for a game and see what goals they have accomplished.

You can then send them a text or voice mail and ask how in the hell they beat level 7 on Hard mode in Condemned. Or how they got the uber weapon in Oblivion. It's up to the game developer's to assign those achievements as creatively as possible throughout their game.

So every game will have a small portion of Live integrated into it. As for multiplayer, you can read the previews and figure out what games will have that feature. I may update my list at the begining of the thread later to reflect it if I get some time later.

Microsoft updates official Xbox website to promote 360

Ellie Gibson 13:38 26/10/2005

But list of backwards compatible games has yet to appear

Microsoft has revamped the official Xbox website to provide a comprehensive guide to Xbox 360 hardware, software titles and online services ahead of the console launch.

Xbox.com now features the 360 logo and a full rundown of pricing details, along with a list of accessories that will be available from launch day. The Games section has trailers for key 360 titles such as Battlefield 2 and Project Gotham Racing 3, plus a Downloadable Content page that currently bears the message "Coming soon".

The Xbox Live section has details of the free Silver service and fee-payable Gold Membership package, plus a guide to the Marketplace - "Your one-stop shop on Xbox Live for downloadable content, trailers, casual arcade games, card/board games, demos and more for Xbox 360."

One thing missing from the new site is a list of current-generation Xbox games which are backwards compatible with the hard drive-equipped Xbox 360. Speaking to MTV news recently, Xbox VP Peter Moore said the list will appear on the site within the next week or two. Visitors will be able to request email updates informing them when new games are added.

The website overhaul marks the latest move by Microsoft to gear up for the 360's imminent release - it will hit North American stores on November 22, with releases in Europe and Japan to follow on December 2 and 10.

Battlefield 2 is coming to 360 also? Dang...I guess I can trade my XBOX copy in eventually. Although, I heard EA screwed the LIVE portion of the game (only EA servers allowed...not user created)

Channel9 (.msdn.com) has a 15 minute video giving a little demo of the Xbox 360. It's done with the Live devs, and there are no games shown, but it shows plenty of the hardware (mostly non-final versions, but they look it) and Live setup. Some cool stuff:

Wireless controller can power on/off the system, get's 35-40 hours of play time per charge, and when the battery runs low you just attach the cord to the 360 and continue playing while they charge, without having to stop your game.

The "X" button on the controller brings up a 'guide', the dev didn't talk too much about it, but I think he said it would be availble at all times, even in games, to allow the user to change music tracks, view stats, etc.

Detachable 20GB HD looked pretty slick. It docks on to the side/top of the system.

Wireless net adpater can use a,b, or g networks and stream Hi-Def content (a,g only) from a Media Center on the network. It also had a very good looking remote for the 360, I think the integration here could be very cool.

Plus you get to see some of the 360's menu system in action.

From 360update.com:

Microsoft’s Vole drama army dropped a bomb today in a backhanded way. During the talk on multithreaded programming, Microsoft used the 3 core, 2 thread per core Xbox360 as an example. The bomb was that the first generation of Xbox titles, all of them, are single threaded. Not good.

The Inq has gotten its hands on an Xbox360, yes, there is a Wal-Mart near us, and was completely underwhelmed by the quality of the games. Graphics quality was poor, and pixels were showing up blocky, ruining the wow-factor of the new console.

Every new machine has a nasty first set of games as the programmers work up to speed on the hardware. In this case, the up side is that there is about 6x the CPU power available and coming to a console near you in the second generation of games.

The scary part is that everyone tells me that the PS3 is harder to program for than the Xbox360, and the tools are nowhere near the quality of Microsoft's. That means that even with an extra 6 months of design time, the initial PS3 games may be worse.

So is this bullshit or not? I posted a comment already under this "news story" and wanted to see what others thought. I realize we aren't going to see the best games ever right away and I am willing to wait. Nothing will keep me from my 360.

He's basing his opinions on an Xbox 360 kiosk he saw at Wal-Mart that's almost certainly misconfigured (the one down the road from me wasn't set up right either; that, or the set they're using for these kiosks is complete and total garbage). Tons of writers for various magazines and websites have seen the Xbox 360 in action under much more ideal conditions, and none of them have said anything remotely resembling these guys' comments.

I don't really understand the hard-on people have for those sorts of technical specs. If "Kameo" were the exact same game -- not different in any discernable way -- but programmed to use multiple cores/threads -- would he be raving about it, I wonder?

I've watched the videos for Chromhounds and Full Auto on Gamespy a few times now and I must say I have a huge stiff one for both of these games

So, Full Auto is shaping up good huh? I know people sem to like it. Can't you like rewind time or something though? I personally don't like that, but I guess it could work.

I'm sure Chromehounds will be a hit on LIVE. Looks like a great Mech game

I'm not exactly sure how it works but it sounds like you build up a meter sort of like boost that allows you to go back a few seconds to erase a nasty wreck so that it never happened but the impression that I get is that you have to repeat that section of the race; so I doubt that you can take back time too often.

And yeah Chromehounds looks to be just plain badass.

New Perfect Dark Impressions on Dark Agent difficulty:

http://scifibrain.ign.com/index.php?...k=view&id=1226

I was lucky enough to attend a game developer's conference here in Toronto, Ontario and had a chance to personally tryout the new Sci-Fi FPS for Xbox 360 - Perfect Dark Zero. Not only that, I give the game a spin using the hardest difficulty mode - DARK AGENT!

1. Graphics & Animations

When the world first got a peek of Perfect Dark Zero back in May of this year, I was just as worried as most people about how this game's visuals would turn out. Being a huge fan of the original Perfect Dark, I did not want to see this game fail. Let’s be honest here, the first impression of Ms. Dark was very disappointing.

For months I sat there worried, only hearing snippets of information about how the press got to see it behind the scenes at E3. They were impressed…but I was still left worried. Then over the last couple of months we have received a myriad of stills and videos from various sources including right here at IGN. X05 gave us the first official preview video of the game that resulted in the infamous Joanna Dark – APE FACE.

Sitting through the Developers Conference and living through months of mixed reaction to good/bad stills of the game, I was eager to finally get my hands on Perfect Dark Zero…I was not disappointed.

Rare has delivered a visual powerhouse with Perfect Dark Zero that left me drooling for more. Playing on the now famous Samsung screens that Microsoft has been using at most of their events, and witnessing the visuals in 720p, it is hard not to love this Rare FPS prequel.

The biggest facets of the graphics that stand out are the textures on pretty much everything. I ran Joanna against a wall to take a look at the beautiful wet bricks and the lighting shimmered off them perfectly. The pavement of the parking lot is also very impressive. Once again it looked very damp, but the lighting mixed with good texture mapping gave it a very sexy look.

The one problem that the game's visuals did suffer from was plenty of shimmering. The guns and plenty of textures seemed to have a shimmering effect as Joanna would run. This is really disconcerting as it does take away from such a beautiful game. Kameo didn’t have any of this shimmering and I certainly hope it doesn’t make it into the final version, but it might be too late for that at this point.

The Joanna Dark character model has improved a lot and besides that infamous – APE FACE – sequence still being the same, most of the time the character is top notch. Definitely not on par with what we have seen in games like Gears of War, but definitely worthy of a first generation title. The enemy character models, while detailed, didn’t impress me nearly as much. Looking at them through my scope made me feel like I was playing Silent Scope. Very bland looking models, but I guess I can’t ask for everything.

Explosions looked very tight with excellent particle effects. While the environments are not completely destructible, there are usually plenty of items to blowup such as cars and canisters. Of course I only got to play the first two levels, so there could certainly be a lot more items to destroy later in the game.

From the videos I saw about a month ago, the rag-doll physics look to be turned down a slight bit. The enemies did not go flying like they did in those early videos, but they did still feel a bit exaggerated. At one point I decided to cover behind a wall and peck at a guys body parts to see what kind of movement he would make when I hit him. Started with his kneecaps and he would jerk to the side of the corresponding kneecap, but then get back up (I am playing on Dark Agent so the characters take a lot of hits to go down). Once both kneecaps are hit, he turned backwards and bent over at the waist…giving me a clear shot of his ass. So I capped his ass and then he just sort of leaned against the doorway he was in. It looked as if he was standing up, but I think he just sort of died and lay there. Don’t really know what to think about it, but I sure had fun.

Reload animations are sweet and unique for each weapon.

Also, I did notice one instance of pop-up during the first cut-scene of the game. A plane flying overhead doesn’t appear for the first few seconds, but suddenly pops-in out of nowhere.

2. Sound

I could barely hear anything in the room we were stuffed in, so I can’t comment that much on sound. The voice-over sounds horrible though. Why did they decide to make Joanna Americanized again? Too much Alias?

3. Gameplay

This game is extremely fun to play. First let me tell you that while everyone else there was playing on Agent mode, and pretty much all the videos I have seen have been on Agent mode, I decided to pick DARK AGENT. I am no prissy and take my licks like a man. The first time I tried the Rooftop level on Dark Agent I got my ass handed to me on a silver platter. I didn’t bother to pace myself and watch where I was going and who was around the corner; I just simply ran in guns blazing and the AI called me on it. I was dead before I could reach the first zip line.

Round 2. As soon as I started again bullets were whizzing by my head. I turn to use the scope to line up the enemy and with one shot to the head the bogy is down. I move down a plank way along the rooftops and see a guy shooting at my father with a sniper rifle. I keep my distance and snipe him with my pistol again. This almost seems too easy at this point. I make my way up a ladder and down another walkway with a wall on my right side…turn the corner and multiple bogeys are on me. If you try to run and gun these guys you will most likely die…why?? It seems that Dark Agent mode works a lot like Legendary mode in Halo. You need to preserve ammo. This makes gameplay extremely skill oriented as it can take quite a bit of bullets to get these guys down if you are just blindly firing. You need to use as few bullets as possible, so I used the cover option, took my time and fired away when I thought it was best.

Dark Agent Mode probably wont be as difficult as Halo’s Legendary mode, but I certainly think that it will be fun and the AI seemed to be adequate on this setting. Personally, I don’t see myself playing on any other level besides Dark or Perfect Agent Mode.

Also, for those of you who are wonder about the roll vs. jump… I had no problems with the roll and didn’t miss a jump function at all. Rolling away from gunfire and into cover felt very natural and my movement didn’t feel constricted at all.

Load times were killer though. Loading up either the Rooftop or Parking Lot took about 45 seconds and this was off of the hard drive. This is something they need to tighten up before launch.

4. Multiplayer

I debated writing about multiplayer considering that I barely had a chance to touch it. Didn’t even get to play co-op, but I did get to play some deathmatch on some sort of snow level. It was only one-on-one, but we did have some fun. If the levels are supposed to scale down depending on how many people you have on the map…I didn’t feel it. This snow map felt huge and we only found each other twice. The roll and cover moves came in handy during both of my encounters, which allowed me to evade death. After playing this with only one other person I am excited to see how it plays with 32 people on a map.

Sadly, I couldn’t figure out how to get any “Simulants” working, so I cannot comment on that. One of my favorite modes in the original Perfect Dark was the ability to develop your own “Sim” and pick their type of AI. If they implement this in the new game I will be most pleased.

5. Overall Impressions

The amount of people playing at the Perfect Dark Zero kiosks outweighed those at the other 3 games (Kameo, PGR3 and Full Auto). Everyone was enjoying Rare’s new first person shooter and it was incredibly difficult to get some playtime with it. My impressions are based off of roughly 20 minutes of gameplay. I tried to get everything in that I could in such a short period of time, but at the same time I couldn’t help but be immersed in the game I was playing.

Perfect Dark Zero successfully creates an exciting and immersive experience that I can see myself enjoying for some time. While it might not be the Triple A title everyone is looking for, I can certainly say it is close to it and will do its part to carry the weight of the Xbox 360 into the new year. You wont be disappointed by this sexy FPS that has glitz, action and more.

Yeah I've wanted to change my gamertag for a long time. I'm sick of people calling me Martins it's a five people........shit! I'm kakihara1 on like every forum and PC game so I think I'm just going to cancel my current account and change it. When I signed up for XBL a long time ago I didn't realize you were locked into the name.

The system knows who you are and your reputation is never wiped clean, but you can change your tag. I remember somewhere reading about this.

Well I don't think any of us here really have to worry about our reputations, but I've always wondered since XBL has always known who you are by your credit card number, why the hell couldn't you change it before?.......oh well I'm glad that they're changing their ways for the new system

Well, I went to Poverty*Mart last night to give the 360 a try. I wasn't impressed (but I wasn't expecting to be).. but it's hard to judge based on "yet another" FPS game and game that started as an N64 title (and moved through another two before landing).. and I didn't bother with the movies since, well.. they're just movies. The controller does kick ass though, a lot. I'm buying one for my PC as soon as they're available. I wish Project Gotham Racing 3 had been playable. Maybe closer to release.

USK website hints at Xbox 360 launch line-up

Ellie Gibson 09:41 28/10/2005

Key Rare title mysteriously missing from list of games already tested

GamesIndustry.biz has learned that the website for USK, Germany's videogame ratings board, is displaying a list of all the Xbox 360 titles it's been testing since the end of August.

While developers can submit betas for testing, they must have exactly the same content as the final version - which means all games on the list are completed or near to completion, and are likely to launch alongside the 360 when it hits Europe on December 2.

Key title Kameo, an action adventure from Microsoft-owned Rare, was submitted for testing back on August 15 and so is bound to be ready for launch. As is Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, Ridge Racer, NHL 2K6 and NBA 2K6 - all of which were tested in September.

Then on October 4, USK tested Project Gotham Racing 3 - suggesting that the racer will be here on launch day, despite the recent emergence of rumours to the contrary. It's likely to be joined by Peter Jackson's King Kong, Call of Duty 2 and GUN - all tested by the middle of October.

Final Fantasy XI was tested on October 21, and this week USK has been working on FIFA 2006 and Dead or Alive 4.

In addition, a number of Xbox Live Arcade games have been tested, including Bejewelled, Zuma, Hearts and Hexic, the Alexey Pajitnov-created puzzler that will come pre-installed on the Xbox 360 hard drive.

But there's one title that's conspicuous by its absence: Rare's much-hyped shooter, Perfect Dark Zero. This could suggest that it won't make it as a launch title, since there's now only just over a month left in which to get the game tested, manufactured and distributed.

Microsoft cautious on Xbox 360 shipments, warns of profit impact

Rob Fahey 15:11 28/10/2005

Intitial sales spike may be smaller than expected, says Microsoft CFO

The latest financial report from software giant Microsoft shows that the firm's overall profits continue to soar, although major losses are expected from the Xbox 360 in the coming months, and Xbox revenues are declining sharply.

The Home and Entertainment Division, which houses the Xbox as well as the firm's PC games business and other media related businesses, saw its September quarter sales fall to $525 million from $634 million last year, and racked up a loss of $141 million - up marginally from $138 million last year.

Revenue from the Xbox is plummeting in anticipation of the launch of Xbox 360, it seems; the Xbox actually saw a drop of $132 million in revenue, while the PC games business drove a $23 million rise in revenues across the rest of the division.

Financially at least, the division is in for a tough time going forward as well, with the Xbox 360 set to inflict heavy losses in the early stages of its life, as would be expected from any such console.

"Historically, Xbox consoles have negative gross margins," the report says. In fact, all console manufacturers barring Nintendo traditionally rack up negative gross margins early in the lifespan of the hardware, although the systems are generally sold at break-even or better by the end of the lifespan - a milestone which the Xbox never reached due to using off the shelf components from Intel and NVIDIA.

"In fiscal year 2006, we expect Xbox console unit volumes and revenue to increase from fiscal year 2005 due to the launch of the Xbox 360," the report explained. "We expect operating expenses and operating loss to continue to increase as we near the launch of Xbox 360 as a result of launch-related activities and higher initial Xbox 360 console costs."

Speaking to Reuters after the results were announced, Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell also sounded a note of caution about initial shipment numbers of the console - saying that analysts are "expecting more of a launch spike than we were," which seems to suggest that the roll-out of the console may be even slower than previously anticipated.

Looking at the bigger picture, Microsoft had revenue of $9.74 billion for the quarter (up 6 per cent on last year), and racked up profits of $3.14 billion, up an impressive 24 per cent year on year; so while the Xbox may yet have to prove itself financially, the company can certainly afford to bankroll it for a while yet.

Xbox Live marketplace points: 80 per USD

Online retailers are now taking pre-orders on “Xbox 360 Live Marketplace Points.” 1600 points will cost $20 USD, which works out to an exchange rate of 80 points per dollar. Points will be used to purchase items in the Xbox Live Marketplace, including (but certainly not limited to) decals, special rims, and other image-enhancers for your racing cars; clothing for your avatars; additional episodes or levels for a game that you already own, and maybe even special swords and armor for your RPG characters. Heck, you might one day be able to skip that whole “grind” thing and purchase a tricked-out level 60 character in the Xbox 360 version of World of Warcraft (merely rumored at this point, but surely under consideration). Most of these items are expected to cost well under a dollar, which is why they’re commonly called “microtransactions.”

In short, companies are going to do their best to extract additional money out of gamers. They argue that they’re providing fun new ways for gamers to interact with their content, so why shouldn’t they charge for that? Gamers might argue that the $50- to $60-dollar price on most games is payment enough. No matter: add-on transactions via the Xbox Live Marketplace will be here in under a month.

On November 22nd, games will move much closer to the “software-as-service” model that the traditional software industry has been advocating for a decade and that MMOG makers have down to a science.
You can also earn them by playing your games.

^^ Pure Evil ^^ What a load of shit, now not only will we have to deal with fkn cheaters in games but also people who buy their way out of actually having to be good at the game.

Has anyone notice that when you register at xbox.com for your gamercard, the list of titles for favorite games is a bit odd?? Many of the games aren't out yet and there are some that I've just never heard of.
