Best Buy bites back.

Count me in as one of the people that placed an order for a 360 bundle, received the confirmation email...and then got another email a few hours later letting me know that the item was "backordered."

After talking to the customer service folks, I found out that I was not one of the first people to get an order in and I'll have to wait for another shipment. More than likely, the people that didn't get in right away probably will get the same email and the same disappointment! Looks like I'll be hitting the B&M stores like so many others...

Crap.

I don't know if I can get all those Madden achievements. Score a first down? Might be too difficult.

from dealing with Best Buy in the past, this is basically an automated email sent based on the current status in their computer (they don't have them from microsoft yet, so the computer shows it as "backordered"). Same thing happened when Best Buy first had the DirecTV HD-DVR's: you preordered, then got "backordered" emails, which caused a panic over at tivocommunity.com - but it turned out to be a big fuss for nothing. Oh, and the customer support people were clueless throughout the entire process.

I can't tell you 100% if that's the case here, but history shows that those emails don't necessarily mean anything.

Crap.

I'd wait a bit... when I preordered the PSP, I got the same "backordered" email, but it was because it was a preorder and that was they way it was counted. I even got that email a few times. Of course the customer service people should know for sure, but that's a toss-up, right?

I think when you went to the page it even said that the status might show up as backordered or unavailable.

Just got it now...

"Best Buy Customer,
Thank you for contacting Best Buy about the Xbox 360. This message was
automatically generated in an attempt to answer your question as quickly
as possible.
If you are emailing us in regard to the Xbox 360 preorder, due to
limited supply this preorder is no longer available. This product will
however be available in limited quantities at our retail store locations
on Nov. 22nd 2005. If this does not fully answer your question or
address your issue, please reply back to this message with additional
information, and a Best Buy Customer Care Representative will respond as
soon as possible. We look forward to your next visit to one of our
stores or to www.BestBuy.com."

Like that answers my freakin question! So I sent it again. Oh, and by the way I told them that I was going to contact the better business bureau about this cluster fuck. That should really get their attention. I suggest all who got screwed over by their false advertising and shitty customer service do the same...and actually write to the better business bureau, don't just use it as an empty threat.

Oh and I also don't have BB credit card and I still got the e-mail.

Thanks for the info...

I initially assumed that it was a bit odd that a preorder could even be backordered, but after talking to the Customer Service rep, I wasn't really confident that the e-mail I received wasn't anything more than an automated message.

Clearly, the customer service people at BB aren't always reliable. Hopefully, this will be one of those times.

One More BB Thing

I am reading in other forums that there are people that aren't getting the second, "backordered" e-mail. That's not a great sign for guys like me, but so it goes.

At the end of the day, who really knows what's going on?

I tried to pre-order with BB, but I kept getting the "sales tax error". It's been a regular love/ hate relationship over the years with those bastards

I didn't get the second, backordered email, but checking the order status online (now that the site is back up) the items do show as backordered (though the overall status is "In Process"). I also don't see any note of my inputted RewardZone number, so I'm hoping it still counts for points. On a side note, I just got an email from best buy declaring that they're opening three new websites (including one that allows for paid downloaded movies). This on the same day they couldn't even keep their existing website up!

Just curious about this, and in no way am I starting a flame, but how is it false advertising? Sure it's poor planning, poor website support, ordering support, and proper phone staffing, and pretty much poor everything for such a big pre order event, but I don't see false advertising anywhere.

If it is, cool. Let me know and I'll throw that in my email that they'll never answer.

I got a backordered message. It took me about 40 minutes to get an order.
If it is truely backordered, I'll cancel if I find one locally, so no big deal.

I got in touch with a customer service supervisor who said that the 360 promotion had nothing to do with the web site being down. Riiiight.

Well they did say you would be able to order a 360 @ 10:00 CT and many people weren't able to do that; not because of the quantity like they just sold out of them, but by the fact that they weren't able to get the link to work properly/ couldn't get past the sales tax thing/ were told to wait a couple hours ( that one is just fucking insane ) so all in all you weren't able to do what they said you could do. Sounds fairly straightforward to me.

kaki

*Edit* Oh and if they choose not to send a personalized response to me the shit's really going to hit the fan for some poor bastard in customer service

My status for the individual items also changed over the last few minutes.

You might be able to get those points by logging into http://www.myrewardzone.com/ , clicking on "My Account", and then filling out the "Missing Points" form. I'm not sure what the customer service PIN is for an online order.

I love how people are pissed at Best Buy. . It is all their fault! Nevermind the 9 months prior that you could pre-order at many other shopping establishments.

I for one didn't bother because I don't want to be forced into some expensive bullshit bundle to guarantee the store makes a little extra. Fuck that. I'm taking my chances on release day.

You knew going into this it would be limited. Either you get one (great!) or you don't(big deal). I may have to wait a week or two, but so what. A whole week without a 360! Whatever was life like before that? It is a gaming system. Life goes on.

I have no intention of flaming you. That is a perfectly legitimate question. I have it in writing that I would be able to order by a certain time...that did not happen. At exactly 10:00 my page went dead. I can see if I came into this late and everything was sold out. Cool. But I was there almost and hour before the sale began and did not even get a shot at it like I was promised. I could also see if this problem only pertained to me, but from what I read it applies to a great volume of people. They fucked up and I'm calling them on it.

Thanks for posting the same thing twice. Just in case I didn't read it the other thread right.

And I didn't have the budget for this 9 months ago. Believe it or not, I also don't want to spend all that time waiting in line on release day when I could be with my family instead. I also wanted to get this right away so that I could play on Thanksgiving w/ all of my cousins. So if you don't mind waiting. Awesome. But keep your snap judgments to yourself.

I was one of those "Select" RZ members who received the Xbox 360 pre-order. I actually got in, had the stupid bundle in my cart, went to check out and I kept getting the error "We're sorry, we can not calculate the tax information at this time..." I couldn't check out! I emptied the cart and retried multiple times (as a network admin I should have know the more I tried in futility it wouldn't get better but I WANTED MY 360!) :-) Same result. Then I logged out of bb.com. Reopened the email, clicked the link, and was informed the pre-order period had closed. I'm so upset right now I don't know what to do. I immediately emailed bb.com and I don't expect any satisfaction. It's a little consolation to see I'm not the only one who got the shaft today during this preorder. What a joke...
