Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

I finished last night, at least the Batman story, I still need to do the last catwoman mission. I think it was good, no GOTY candidate of course, but really good game, solid 8.5 or something like that. And I absolutely loved the last song during the credits.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

Finished the main game a few nights ago.

Good, solid game. Mostly enjoyable, and worthy of your time.

BUT...

I couldn't help feeling somewhat indifferent, even a bit lukewarm towards the whole affair. Maybe because I loved Arkham Asylum so much. It was leaner, more focused, maybe less ambitious but entirely dedicated to its premise. Arkham City seemed so... sloppy. The story was an illogical mess, especially the entire Protocol 10 revelation, which made absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

Spoiler:
So Hugo Strange, backed by Ra's Al Ghul, builds a city-wide prison/asylum, only to BLOW IT UP AND KILL THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE INSIDE, believing that major metropolitan cities around the country (if not the world) would not only NOT be utterly appalled and morally repulsed by such a brazen act of coldblooded murder, but they'd FALL ALL OVER THEMSELVES TO BE THE NEXT IN LINE? Really?

Did a 12 year old IMDB'er come up with that?

I still love the games just because the combat is so fantastic and unique.
The story in Arkham Asylum was much better because it was cohesive, and constantly built upon itself. The story in City was fine, but the story was pushed out in more of an episodic format to me. It felt like you would go to different nodes and activate the next story point, instead of being constantly pulled through the plot, which helped Asylum. But that is a problem I find with many open world games. Don't get me wrong, I liked the story in City, but it did feel like I missed a bit of how we got from Asylum to City. They mention it briefly, but the explanation doesn't feel terribly satisfying.

Also, and I admit this will sound dumb, a lot of the plot felt very videogamey to me. I didn't get that feeling in Asylum, but there were points in the main quest where I had to break 3 of these, or go get this thing for that person, that were easy to see through to what the developers were trying to accomplish. Doesn't mean those things weren't fun, but I felt totally immersed in Asylum in a way that never happened with City. The only thing I can remember that took me out of Asylum really was the Riddler clues all over the place.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

I think they wanted to to expand to Gotham City (including recognizable landmarks and places), but they didn't want to have to deal with citizens running around, so the whole Arkham City thing was born. And instead of "citizens" being terrorized you have "political prisoners" (all of whom wear parkas for some reason).

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

help. im stuck in the beginning where i am supposed to find joker.

there are 3 valves i am supposed to hit to turn off the steam.
when i hit one to turn it off, the other that i hit turns back on.
i tried hitting all 3 as fast as possible, but cannot get it to work because after you hit one it turns back on in < 2 secs and it takes about 2 secs for the batarang to retract.
i must be doing something stupid.

You have to follow the pipe around to a point under the main floor where Batman says he can't go that way and must find a way to shut off the pipe. Then the game will teach you the quick-throw. It is stupid, not you.

Instead of telling the audience the entire long winded story, they included the back story for Protocol 10 under Arkham City Stories. In other words, for video game based on a comic book, you have to read a bunch of stuff to get caught up.

Here is the short and narrow:

Spoiler:

Ra's Al Ghul convinced Gotham City's government in the early 1900s to back a plan for Wonder City. The city would be "governed" by mechanical guardians and the city itself would be free of crime.

The city was powered by Lazurus (the precursor to Titan) which allows Ra's to live "forever." Wonder City never came to fruition and was buried under the current Gotham and what is now Arkham City.

The plan was to herd the criminals into one location, kill them all and completely rid Gotham of the criminal scum. Thus turning Arkham City into the new Wonder City.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

Just finished the game tonight myself, and it's a really good game... probably the best game I've played all year but, yeah. I feel that Arkham Asylum was much better. The tone of that game overall was just fantastic... claustrophobic at times, and you really felt like you were crawling amongst the true underbelly of Gotham City. I didn't feel that way so much in Arkham City. It was a big open space with enemies scattered about, and it didn't create that same sense of urgency for me. I felt the way some of the villain plot points were tied up were kind of quick and disappointing, and I really missed the chills that the first game provided me with the Scarecrow hallucination sequences.

Arkham City is fantastic for what it tried to accomplish, really it is. But, Arkham Asylum is still the best for me overall.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

i'm getting confused with the side quests.
for example, i am doing the fragile alliance quest.
one of the barrels i need to destroy is in the museum and 2 are in the restricted area.
i can't seem to get inside the museum or the restricted area.
are these areas that will eventually get unlocked later on? (i'm still near the beginning of the game)

also, how do you answer the damn phone on the xbox?
i tried all buttons LB,RB, RT, LT. nothing seems to work.

Some things you can't get to until you have certain gadgets.

I answer the phones by hitting the A button.

Finally started this game. Throwing you right into the game without any kind of refresher tutorial was annoying but not near as annoying as

Augmented Reality Training Failed.

I agree that the advanced training exercises are a huge jump in difficulty compared to the beginning exercises. I completed the beginning ones without failing at all, but the I kept failing at the advanced ones for over an hour before I decided to look on youtube for a guide.

The key is to only use very slight adjustments. I tended to overcorrect Batman a lot. Keep a calm head and only make slight movements on the analog stick.

Personally, I thought these advanced exercises were probably the hardest part of the game. Even New Game+ with its increased difficulty and the "Extreme" Challenges weren't that hard.

Here is the youtube guide I used:

Spoiler:
Yes, you just can't go back in through the smokestack. There is a back door entrance behind the building. You will actually have to go back later on, and either Oracle or Alfred tells you about the back door. I am not sure if you can actually use the back door until the main quest takes you there since I didn't try it, although you won't be able to progress past the first room until you get a specific gadget that you get right before the main quest sends you there. The Titan container is in the first room if I remember right, so you might still be able to get it.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

I wandered around for 3 hours last night wiping out every last thug in the city. No phone calls were coming in, no random civilian attacks, did the Bane canisters I could get to which left training missions.

Arkham City was a fucking ghost town and I couldn't figure out where to go to find Joker for the first time. What sucked was finding Riddler trophies I couldn't get to because I hadn't learned to crouch or slide yet. I couldn't bookmark locations yet either. Open world fail or shitty gamer fail?

I had to look up where to go (smokestacks) and once that ball got rolling, the game was a blast...except for the training missions.

I guess the take away from all this is that I leveled up 3-4 times already and this was all before meeting Joker.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

I finally beat the Joker fight, so that is where I am now. I tried over and over, got frustrated, tried more, and just kept getting worse and worse and had to stop. I tried it the next morning, and I had it done in just about five minutes. I also forgot about critical strikes until I got to this fight, so I went the whole game up to this point without remembering that.

I'm also playing on hard, and I still say just like I did for AA, that this is the only way to play this game. It's so much more incredible on hard.

I agree. I tried, I really tried. But since I put it down after about 5 hours in I've played BF3, COD, and even Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper and can't find myself interested to pick it back up now that I have Assassin's Creed to play. I don't know what it is, I loved Asylum but this one isn't doing it for me. Suppose I should finish just to get a decent trade in value.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread

I played through Arkham Asylum to 100% completion at least a dozen times. I played through Arkham City to 100% completion once, and I don't really feel like ever doing it again. I had planned on selling the console version and rebuying it on PC when it finally gets released, but I don't even plan on doing that now.
