That's incredible. I also just saw this...
UK retail tracking company GFK Chart-Track announced today that Mario Kart 8's release on Friday helped Wii U hardware sales rise a massive (and devilish) 666 percent in the UK. Nintendo believes that a single title can alter the fate of a platform; could Mario Kart 8 be that game?
Specific sales figures were not divulged, and Chart-Track does not track digital sales, but the firm added that 82 percent of total Mario Kart 8 sales in the UK came through the Mario Kart 8 bundle. In addition, Mario Kart 8 recorded the best-selling first week for any Wii U game since the platform's launch in the UK in 2012.
Overall, Mario Kart 8 was the second best-selling game of the week, only behind Ubisoft's Watch Dogs, which is the fastest selling game in Ubisoft's history. Notably, Watch Dogs launched for five platforms (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC), while Mario Kart 8 is a Wii U-exclusive.

That's impressive; I'd have to imagine Smash Bros should sell big too. Initially i just figured it was Wii U owners needing games to play, but the uptick in sales is great news for them.

I was a little shocked this weekend when I actually had to hunt down a copy of Mario Kart 8, figured there's be plenty. Both of the people I know with a Wii U picked up MK8, that bonus download definitely sealed the deal. Glad to see some good news about the Wii U.

Planning to get MK8 tomorrow. Never did register any game or console on it. Is it necessary to register the Wii U in order to register MK8 to get the free game? I think i threw out the codes when i got the system.

Mario Kart 8 is down to $48.81 shipped on Amazon right now. You're legitimately nuts if you own a Wii U and don't get this.

These are estimates but, surprisingly, VGChartz usually does alright on the Hardware side of things (not so much on Software). That's one hell of a Mario Kart 8 boost

I think you just need to register/link your Wii U to your club nintendo account in order to get the free game if you buy it from the eShop

FYI, it looks like Groupon has 20% off any purchase (up to $50). They have both the Mario Kart Bundle ($280 after discount) and the regular game ($48 after discount).

I'm waiting for the next Club Nintendo calendar year which starts in July for it to count towards gold status.

The gaming media will report this in their usual way: by insisting that these sales don't matter and that the Wii U is still totally doomed.
