That might actually carry some weight if it didn't come from Entertainment Weekly, which treats shit like Jersey Shore, Bachelor Pad, and Project Runway like they're must-see cultural events.

OK, this comment from youtube made me laugh...

Jones: I don't want to do this.
Lucas: I can't change your mind?
Jones: No!
Lucas: That's great, we got it. Thanks!
Jones: ...Nooooo!

I've gone ahead and put these in my rental queue with Blockbuster, I definitely want to see/hear the upgrade to Blu but will wait for a better price hopefully during the holidays or later. Not going to pay more than $45 for this set, that's for sure. Because I'm at least going to assume the PT has not been made any worse like the OT has with the move to Blu and I definitely want the extras as well that comes with the set.

I'm still getting these because I need to own Star Wars on Blu-ray, warts and all. I just wish Lucas would stop ADDING warts to these films.

I have no doubt, that some day, perhaps upon Lucas' death, that the OT will be polished up (but otherwise left unchanged), and released to the public in whatever form is most technically advanced for the time. It would be fairly easy to do, and will be another blatant cash grab.

The EW article is beyond awful. That guy is right, he does need to put all the SW nerd, EU stuff behind him. This isn't about SW, it's about film preservation. Films should be preserved and presented as they were originally screened.
If James Ivory, after the death of Ismael Merchant decided to go through their catelogue of 40+ films they made together and use special effects to "improve" them it would be a crime and people would be crying foul.
People let the fact that SW has an appeal to children get in the way of the facts. Films shouldn't be changed like this, and if they are then ALL versions should be made available.
Also, SW wasn't a hit in 1977 ONLY because of "stupid kids". EVERYONE went to see Star Wars, it was a cultural phenomenon similar to Titanic, where even your Aunt Ginny went and saw it twice.

Interesting read, but seems to me like the dude who wrote it has some issues.. clearly he hates his younger self and is embarrassed by the way he was as a kid and the time he wasted reading SW books. He should tell his therapist about this instead of writing it in Entertainment Weekly.

I'd make a counter argument: Star Wars (the first two anyway) are one of the few things kids tend to love that does genuinely hold up into adulthood, which makes the changes all the worse. Now, instead of being something you can grow up with and get more out of it as time passes, you're stuck with these increasingly degraded versions that dilute the narrative, the themes, and the filmmaking. Lucas' inspiration for Star Wars was The Hidden Fortress, not Spongebob Squarepants. Star Wars and Empire can and will stand the test of time in their original forms. These new versions can't even make it through the decade.
(And I have to defend Spongebob a bit, when the creators of Spongebob are being silly, they do it on purpose and relish their goofiness. I'm convinced Lucas actually thinks he's making serious and needed changes, which makes the silliness even sillier because it doesn't have that self-awareness that campy bits usually have).

re: Star Wars
Just canceled my pre-order...used this in the reason box.
People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.
In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.
Attention should be paid to this question of our soul, and not simply to accounting procedures. Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself.
- George Lucas who needs to listen to himself...

The Darth Vader "NOOOOO" scream is the perfect example of attempting to retcon a bad decision. The scream in III was stupid, so in order to justify it, Lucas had to destroy one of the most powerful scenes in the OT. Its a drive by murder to save his more recent decisions. Bleh.
