When I was in 3rd grade there was a whole line of Star Trek The Motion Picture Shirts. I had two. One was Kirk's white shirt and the other was a grey long sleeve which i think a lot of the crew wore. I must of looked like a real goober.
I think I finally wore them out in the 4th or 5th grade.

I'm sorry, but I get so tired of this argument. The sets looked like they did back then for budgetary reasons. A modern day submarine or jet fighter has more sophisticated looking equipment than TOS.

But that's not the point. You can still make an updated bridge that still looks like the old one. Even if they put in LCD screens and touch screens instead of switches and lightboxes they can still have the basic layout as well as the basic feel of TOS.

Funny movie. Flawed, but funny. I actually remember the boys in elementary school being interested in Star Trek and Star Wars and all the nerdy stuff. It wasn't until high school when it was all "uncool" and then it just went over the top with the SNL Shatner sketch!

Still not clear on whether this supposed to be the first mission of Kirk's Enterprise, or just how this all fits together.
In this movie, did the "seven" all graduate from the academy at the same time? Why are they all together if this isn't an early voyage of the Enterprise? It was made very clear in "The Menagerie" that Spock was serving on board the Enterprise before Kirk was in command. And then we have Captain Pike and Spock's parents tossed into the mix. We know at least part of it takes place at Star Fleet academy, we just don't know it's all going to fit together.
And that's what's making me anxious about this project.
Look at the actors... McCoy looks about twenty years younger in this movie that he did in the series. "Trek Babies?"

Personally, while I am looking forward to this movie, I think everyone involved could have saved themselves a lot of headaches by declaring this a reboot instead of something that is meant to tie into the existing canon. Then you wouldn't worry about how it ties into TOS and the movies, and you wouldn't have such a fierce comparison between the original actors and the current batch. It could have done for Star Trek what Battlestar Galactica did for that franchise. I don't see how you can really go forward beyond this movie. How many missions did Kirk and co. have before TOS?

I really hope that Star Trek fans will view it this way just like Batman Begins "rebooted" the movie continuity. And given what Abrams has done in the past, I actually have pretty high hopes for this movie, because it will give a modern "feel" to the TOS continuity.

See I always felt like Batman Begins could have been taken either way with the last scene and the Joker card. If it wasn't monetarily successful enough to restart the series anew, then they could always (loosely) say it was a prequel to the first film. It's not like they hadn't played fast and loose with continuity in the Batman series before.
Anyway, that's what I think Nimoy and the time travel stuff is . . . an option to go either in either reboot or continuity direction.

So what? They need to stay true to their own Trek universe. What real-world jets look like is irrelevant.

I just hope this movie tells a good story, plain and simple. It's been a while since I walked out of the theater after seeing a good Trek movie.

See, I think Abrams is a hack -- the only thing he's done that I like is Lost, and he's barely involved with that apart from the initial concept --which means that my biggest worry is that he'll make it like Alias or Mission Impossible 3.

That EW interview was certainly intriguing. I'm not a big Trek fan by any means. I enjoy TOS and I've seen the first two films, plus I own 3 & 4. I dig it's universe and all, but I was never really into it because it always seemed too geeky for me. I'm probably just the kind of person Abrams is making this thing for. I like what I've heard from him on how he's planning to breathe new life into the franchise, but I'll wait for a full trailer before I commit to seeing it .

The point is our 2008 tech looks way more sophisticated than the old Enterprise. In 200 years it would look much more high tech, not worse. If they had had a better budget or the show shot in a different year, the bridge equipment would not have looked like that.
This seems to be taking "canon" and everything to the anal extreme.
Do you want to show them eating colorful little foodcubes too??

For me to buy that, they have to first prove to me that they're familiar with the canon.
I can buy that Chekov was on the Enterprise but not a bridge officer during the first season, but if this is indeed about Kirk's first mission as Captain, then they're breaking canon by (A) having McCoy on board (some really old dude was CMO in "Where No Man's Gone Before), and (B) not having Gary Mitchell as the XO.

Because the new Star Trek movie is essentially a full continuity "reboot" (what the comics industry call a retcon), if J.J. Abrams does it right it would be something that we can enjoy. By doing it as a "retcon," we can keep the spirit of TOS but with the "futuristic" technology that the series really deserved.

The guy in blue with the dark hair--- is that supposed to be McCoy?

To paraphrase JJ Abrams, this film isn't (necessarily) being made for Star Trek fans, it's being made for fans of really good movies.
I've already said it 100 times, but I'll say it again: Nimoy wouldn't be onboard if JJ wasn't going to be true to the spirit of Star Trek. But we shouldn't go into this thing expecting it to be consistant with current "canon" - heck, even the 10 Star Trek films already released had a number of inconsistancies with TV Episodes.

Yes. It doesn't have to be as bulky as the '60s Enterprise, but knobs and switches that can be easily repaired make a lot more sense on a ship-of-the-line than touch-screens that can be obsoleted by a hair-line crack.
