Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming
I've heard positive word about the some of the testing of this movie (like here at Den of Geek) so I'm starting to think they just wanted to get out of this particular summer. Even if they did it in a bone-headed way.

^ Huh? This has the makings of a Hollywood documentary. Almost sounds like they're making two different versions at this point. If it is going back in front of the cameras, that must mean they have screwed it up royally.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming
Honestly, I'm not looking for anything that special of a story with this (like The Expendables). If I can watch some good 2D action and see The Rock kicking ass, that's enough for me. A good script and interesting plot is a bonus.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming
Okay I got word from someone who's seen the film (geez, I sound like an "insider" douche
) and apparently it's good. The problems are Paramount running scared from Battleship's failings and apparently a major sticking point with focus groups was the lack of screentime for Tatum. They wanted more of him and, since Tatum is having a big year, Paramount is inclined to give them more Tatum (though they'll likely just tack something on to the third act of the film).
So, in summary, the film does not suck but Paramount fears Battleship will sour general audiences to G.I. Joe: Retaliation. And they're taking advantage of a bad situation to add more Tatum and maximize foreign sales with 3D.
That said, although I understand pushing the film back a couple of months, pushing it back almost a whole year is insane.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming
I saw this in the Wrestling thread and thought it was a joke. WTF?? This was a PERFECT pre-4th of July release. This makes no sense whatsoever. Doing this for 3D is fucking stupid. It's a format no one particularly likes and most see post-conversion for what it is: a way to bilk more money from the audience.

I can see guys liking him fine from 21 Jump Street but I can't assume he was that popular among males in GI Joe.

What a catch 22. Most everyone hated Tatum in ROC, so Rock takes the lead. Then Tatum blows up in 21 Jump Street.

I get delaying the film a few months (and taking advantage of the time to tack on a few more scenes or simply an epilogue/teaser with Tatum) to distance themselves from Battleship but delaying the film a whole year will sour the general public towards it.
This will do more harm than any potential good.

They obviously didn't screen this for hardcore GI Joe fans. On the plus side, if they bring back JGL, that might mean they are using him to film the kind of scenes we discussed earlier regarding the new CC. Of course there's also the chance that his upcoming movie for this September might make him a bigger star, so then they can have two hot items in it.
Wait a minute....something just registered to me. JGL plays a young version of Bruce Willis in in his new movie, Bruce Willis is Joe Colton, the original GI Joe, which means: Cobra Commander and GI Joe are the same guy!

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming
Probably the test audiences were upset over a lack of Duke (the character) and the focus testers just took that to mean "people want more Channing Tatum".

Spoiler:
Not sure how true this is but the source has been pretty reliable in the past for stuff like this...someone in a more recent post may have already mentioned this as I am just reading this thread now.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming
Does Tatum have a bunch of other movies coming out? Otherwise his 21 Jump Street fame could evaporate before the new release date... just reshoot the trailers and feature him more if they want to capitalize on him.

From AICN
Someone who'd recently seen the new G.I. JOE picture at a test screening told me last night about some interesting and suspicious questions on their post-screening questionnaire thingie. Edited and paraphrased...
"I cant help but kinda call bullshit on this 3D shenanigan..."
Questions included...
"How did you feel about him (Tatum) in the film?" and "Do you feel there should have been more of him...?"
This individual found it highly suspicious that these questions were being posed at a test screening which occurred before the announcement of the film's delayed release

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming
Looks like I didn't need to spoiler that as it was mentioned in several posts before mine... ![LOL](/images/smilies/lol.gif)
Seems like that is going to be one of the main reasons and the 3D is a diversion...

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming
The move surprised even the film's director, Jon M. Chu, who early this week still expected the movie to open next month.
In an interview Monday with The Times, the 32-year-old director expressed excitement about the impending release date and a new trailer, and sounded like a filmmaker who felt he had already cleared the toughest hurdles of post-production.
"It's been a crazy journey but we're almost there," he said. "I'm excited for people to finally see it or even finally get a glimpse. I'm really excited about it."

Hmmm Just read this from the Comcast home page:
A source tells E! News that Tatum, who plays Captain Duke Hauser, did not want to be attached to the follow-up and only agreed to do it if the filmmakers promised to kill him off in the movie as well as reduce the size of his role. That may explain why the studio turned to action mainstays The Rock and Willis as insurance.
So now there is more Tatum?

I can't believe that they are pulling up stakes this year after they have been promoting it so strongly. Seems like they are terrified over something.
Very odd decision.
