I had no problem with Wayans either. He was actually rather likeable as a comic relief character.

Agreed. Actually I don't have much of a problem with the first movie in general. Cobra Commander aside, it was pretty much a live-action version of GI Joe.

Yup. CC is about the only thing that bothers me about the first movie. I'd add the lousy acting from the chick who played Cover Girl but she was barely an over glorified cameo so it wasn't too big a deal.

That shot of London being blasted in the Japanese trailer is new.

Is it? Didn't they show London being destroyed in the first few trailers? I seem to recall that.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

In the first trailer you saw London getting destroyed while looking south.
In the last 2 trailers you are looking north with Big Ben in the middle of the screen.

You're right. It's a blink-and-you-miss-it additional shot.

Man, is that Japanese narrator annoying.

You know, that's pretty much my opinion of the first one in a nutshell. Probably why I don't 100% understand all of the hate it gets. As a comic book adaptation it doesn't really hold, but it definitely felt like the cartoon I grew up watching as a kid. It's not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it's main source of inspiration was a cartoon meant to sell toys, keep the expectations in check. Also, aside from the end segment, Sienna Miller really had the Baroness' mannerisms down, she just lacked the accent.

Just cuz it's inspired from the source that it is doesn't mean we had to have a meh movie.

Except the movie wasn't meh. It was a fun popcorn flick with only a few missteps (mainly the reveal of CC).

New clip reel:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5THgCERowTQ?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I dunno why but I'm not terribly excited by it. Felt like sharing anyway.

I always laughed at the criticisms of the power suits. Those things made more sense than a lot of the stuff they used in the cartoon/toys/comics.

And for all the bitching, the power suits sequence turned out to be one of the best parts of the movie.

While G.I. Joe's sales and innovation remained strong in 1987, many fans consider the year to mark the beginning of Joe's decline, due to the cancellation of the cartoon series. Some Joe and Cobra character concepts (e.g., Psyche-Out and Raptor) and vehicles (e.g., the Pogo) were too "out-there" for the more traditional fans.

Tomahawk and H.A.V.O.C. were my last G.I. Joe toys and H.A.V.O.C. seemed a bit "out-there" to me.

I thought the underwater fight was absolutely terrible. Total mess.

Cobra Commander was lame.

There were some slight miscasts. Didn't like Eccelston as proto-Destro at all. I don't like Tatum at all; he sleptwalked through the movie.

Pacing was a bit off. Also the flashbacks ran a little too long, especially Snake Eyes'.

That's interesting, but I'm 36 so I was in the sweet spot for G.I. Joe, and I had both the early toys that were more realistic and things like the Pogo, so it all blends together. I don't think kids my age were very discerning or "traditional" fans of G.I. Joe, whatever that means.

It just seemed really silly to criticize the power suits as being unrealistic while trying to ignore the pile of ridiculousness that is G.I. Joe in general.

Being only 4 years younger, I'm in the same boat as you.

Was that a naked Storm Shadow getting killed in a ball of flame in that clip?

poor little clone.

Remember the "it's all just a dream" ending in movies? Now they can have movies where everyone gets killed off and at the end of the movie, a character can say, "they were all clones that died." Clones? Phew, that's a relief, cuz we wouldn't want those originals dying off. It's better to have those inferior clones get ting killed.

One of the best clone stories since Blade Runner was from an episode of the Justice League "The Ultimen" - sad touching stuff.
