If they really wanted left field casting it would have been Idris Elba, and I would have loved it.

I think it's safe to say that Idris Elba is amazing. While I do think Luthor is a visually iconic character to a point... Elba is such a damn good actor that Luthor not being white isn't a big deal. In reality... Luthor as a image is just a powerful bald white guy with great presence and charisma. I'd totally dig Elba as Luthor. Now I want Luthor played by Elba.
I thought it was awesome how badass Heindall was in Thor 2... With a knife. A goddamn knife to take down that ship.

John Byrne's Man Of Steel era Luthor was my favorite version. I wish they had gone that route.

Eisenberg wasn't a doofus in Now You See Me. He was pretty good in that.

I guess your idea of a doofus and mine is completely different.

Stanley Tucci would make a great Lex Luthor, he's also give him the comedic edge that Gene Hackman did on the 70s Superman.

I like the casting of Jesse Eisenberg. It says to me Lex Luthor isn't going to be a grandstanding, beard scratching super villain. But maybe someone more rooted in reality. As much as thats possible in a superhero movie.
Then again I have very low interest in most comic book movies. Whether its the director, the writers or the cast, it doesn't make a huge difference to me. At the end of the day the giant corporate entity behind these films has a product to sell, and it has to appeal to the widest audience possible. The films can succeed within these corporate boundries, but only moderately. No matter who is attached to the film, the film has to exist within the studio's parameters of what they think is the most marketable. Thats probably the reason theres been over 100 comic book movies and none have been anything more than pretty good. I don't think any studio in the world will give a director enough rope to make a comic book movie that might actually be great.

Anyway, I love the casting of Jesse Eisenberg. He could take the confidence he exudes in Now You See Me, and mix it in with his unparalleled brilliance with the lawyer scenes in The Social Network, and then bring something that he's never done. I think he's a very versatile actor who hasn't been able to play the challenging roles since he doesn't really have the luxury of a Joaquin Phoenix or other more prominent actors with a long career list. He's still young, and he may surprise everyone.

I don't get it. Everyone's all like "Eisenberg would be the perfect Lex Luthor," and then when they cast him, everyone complains?

Eisenberg is an interesting choice but with Irons mentioned in the same breath I'd almost rather see him as Luthor. I'd imagine age is playing a part here. They want a young Lex that can be in a handful of movies and be open to cameos in other flicks.
I agree with you. Downey is the only home run they hit. Close second for me would be Ruffalo, but that's hard to gauge since Bana has minimal screen time in Avengers. Evans is so generic they plucked him from playing another superhero. Hemsworth is solid but I don't think he's 'the one' in terms of casting Thor.
Which great casting job did Marvel do exactly? I'll give you Downey Jr which was out of left field, but everyone else they casted in roles could of just as easily been played by another actor. With the exception of Downey no one had that "Christopher Reeve" type magic.

Marvel did great in casting Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Every other role has been fair to poor at best, including a terrible choice for Hawkeye. If Hawkeye had been a more popular character before the movies, fans would have been outraged.

I think Marvel has done a decent job in casting but I do sort of agree that Downey Jr. was their biggest score. Hemsworth is pretty good as Thor too and I like both Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson as Black Widow and Nick Fury respectively. Everyone else they made work but honestly I think a lot of them would be pretty easy to replace. I think Chris Evans is good as Captain America but I don't necessarily think of him as the character. Same thing goes for Ruffalo as Banner, he's good but the Banner character has been re-cast over three films and all the actors had their strong suits to the character.

Elba is solid as Heimdall. Neal McDonough as Dugan. Paltrow as Potts. Kingsley as... Well... That guy. Ruffalo also did good for Banner. Sif, Volstagg, and Hogun were well cast. Loki was all kinds of awesome.
It's safe to say that Marvel has been rather solid for its casting.

Hemsworth is a couple of years younger than Hiddleston. For what Thor's film demanded? That was appropriate casting for both. Preferably I would've preferred older minded and experienced characters but I'm fine with a younger sibling thing.
