That's pretty much what I've been thinking. "When am I going to play this?" I think I'll be sitting on my couch right in front of my plasma that has an Xbox and a PS2 connected to it.

But the screen is so gorgeous and it has that 'new electronics' smell.
If you have a plasma TV, you really don't need a voice of reason when spending $350

That's like me saying "Shoot, my 27 inch TV cost me $200, I am debating whether or not I want to buy this $15 game."

Thanks, but the camera department doesn't carry them...
Camera departments should be the ones to carry them, as long as they sell Sony digital cameras.
Memory Sticks are the removable media card type which Sony uses.
Memory Stick Duos simply require a tiny adaptor to work with the camera.
As far as I know the only companies that currently make Memory Sticks are Sony and SanDisk.

BTW, Circuit City is having a sale this week on the name-brand Sony cards.
If you don't have a Circuit City locally, the offer is also good online.

I think that should answer most of your questions.

Well, for all my big talk, I caved in and bought one. I figure that when I get the other one from the freebie site, I can either sell it or try to do a return at a store. It'll be an unopened retail version, so the store will be able to resell it anyway. No harm, no foul.

Anyway, no buyer's remorse here. The thing is beautiful. So far I played a tiny bit of THUG 2 Remix, and I have Spidey 2 (the movie) playing with no sound while the PSP sits on my desk here at work. I also picked up Wipeout but haven't tried it out yet. I still don't think the lineup is that great (yet), but I'm sure that there will be some really fun games for it down the line.

I still love my DS for all of its innovation and new gameplay ideas, but when it comes to style and audiovisual quality, there's really no comparison. PSP is way out in front. It's nice to own both systems, since they're in very different niches.

I'll post more impressions later after I get a chance to play the games some more.

I got my first system at Blockbuster last night and it had a dead pixel just off center, which was really distracting to me. This morning I went and exchanged it for the last one they had in stock and it too has a dead pixel, but it's about 1mm from the left edge, so I'm going to take that as a blessing given how many seem to have dead pixels.

I've a bit of trouble seeing things properly playing Tony Hawk, but it's still mighty fun. I've a bit of trouble pulling off special moves in Darkstalkers due to the size of the pad, but again, it's still mighty fun. Wipeout blew me away. I've always loved the series (minus 3) and this one is just lovely. Controls are great, the new system to recharge your shields is great, and I simply can't believe how great it looks. I'm going to try to get Lumines at Best Buy a bit later today (crosses fingers).

Overall I'm really impressed with this thing and can't wait for my gig stick to arrive for even more fun .

Best Buy had up to 512, but I want the 1 gigger.

As an update - I went to Gamestop to get my system. Not only did they have untold Legends, but she also told me the UPS truck would be there within 10 minutes with Tiger Woods on it. And she was right. So I bought both.

I understand this, but I got the feeling nobody in the video game department told the camera department "You're going to need to order a bunch of these, because they go with this new system." That was more of my frustration than anything... that they went out of their way to stock up on every peripheral for the PSP except the memory stick, because that was "the camera department's problem".

When you've gotten a chance to play Tiger, please post your impressions.
The only review I've read said that load times were pretty bad/long!
Close to 30 seconds between every hole!
Let us know what you think. Thanks for the input!

Oh, and I got THUG2 Remix with mine. I haven't played THUG2 before this, so I don't have an 100% comparison, but I did play THUG and THPS4 extensively.

The gameplay is pretty much spot on. The levels that were available from the start all seemed to be as extensive as any I've played on the PS2 versions. The characters looked a bit different, a little less lifelike and more exaggerated in features but the change isn't bad at all. Again, maybe the home console versions were this way, too, I don't know. The 'Freak-out' thing is kind of annoying, as I'm not really a fan of all these little things they keep adding to extend combos. (I didn't like the off-the-board moves added in THUG either, and they're still here.) But all-in-all, this is exactly what I was hoping the game would be.

On a side note, IGN is reporting a June 2005 release for Grand Theft Auto: PSP. How can this be? We haven't even seen a screnshot. Wouldn't they be hyping this already? I'd love to have the game in June, but somehow I think we won't be seeing this until the holiday season.

I just got back from picking up my PSP. Unfortunately, FYE still doesn't have Ridge Racer in yet, but I was able to pick up everything else.

I have only tried out the system very briefly so far. I entered the time, date, nickname information and I played wipeout for a few minutes.

The screen is even better than I had hoped. It is a thing of beauty.

The screen on mine seems fine, no dead pixels or dust as far as I can tell.

I picked up my PSP at Wal Mart last night and got Tony Hawk on the way to work today. I also put the new Star Wars trailer on the memory stick. I am amazed with the screen. I ran a pixel check I found on the sony forums site and only saw one or two bad pixels. People at work today were like WOW.

Using the PSP Video 9 program on the lowest settings, I managed to get an episode of Robot Chicken (about 11 minutes long?) down to 19 MB. And it's actually watchable. It doesn't sound bad. The motion looks fine, although it is stop motion so I'm not sure if that is masking any problems. I did some some compression artifacts in solid areas, and reds looks kind of crappy. But it's still better than most streaming video you'd see on the net.

Yes. I found a website that has the link for the program in the instructions. Do a search on google for it. I do not recall the name of the program. I converted the quicktime Star Wars trailer with no problem.

just got mine from bestbuy.... no games so far, still deciding which one to get

1 dead pixel that i noticed so far, a big one at the middle of the screen, but it only appears at black screen.

btw my friend pick up psp + RR + ape escape, and he got $5 off each game ($35 ea. game) plus he got a $10 gift card
he gave me that gift card when im paying my PSP (i paid him later $10 cash), so basicly he's paying $30 for each game, pretty good deal

Is this launch going to be as big of a success as Sony is hoping?? Reason why I ask--I went to the local Walmart to buy some milk 10 minutes ago, so I strolled over to the electronics section just to see if any were in stock....they had 3 in the glass case. I mean most system launches whether they be console or portable usually are surround by consumer chaos...I mean there shouldn't have been any left in stock in my opinion. I was gonna buy one to put on ebay, but I decided not to. I am glad I didn't....I just went on ebay and they are not bringing much more than what you can buy one for in the store. I mean for instance when PS2 came out....they were going for tons of money on ebay and were impossible to find in stores....even the dag on slim PS2 that came out a few months ago was very difficult to get your hands on. Wasn't the DS harder to get a launch? Anyway I am not trying to flame the PSP...I would love to have one if I had the extra dough...I am just posting an observation.

Current poll on CNN.com is "Would you pay $250 for a playstation portable"

117,000+ votes so far, 90% "no."

So it may be out of the price range of a good bit of non-gamers and casual gamers.

I think u have to remember that Sony release 1million PSP's into the market, and its not on the Holiday season. And with a $249 price tag....its a little higher than a DS. If i am not mistaken, PS2's release was about 500k only and it was during the holiday season.

Someone posted this on the CAG forum, but I can't say anything about it, I'm just posting it:

According to an email allegedly sent out by the online retailer, Video Games Plus, Sony will not replace dead pixels in the PSP’s LCD screen. The malfunction is not under warranty.

The following email was reproduced in this forum:

“To all customers that have preordered a PSP unit,

There have been significant issues regarding the PSP unit and software which have arisen in the past 24hrs that we must update you on. We have already started to receive inventory and begun processing and getting orders ready to ship. The issues are as follow.

DEAD PIXEL WARRANTY AND TESTING…

We have just been infomned by Sony that they will not be warranting any dead pixel units. They are only warranting hardware defects ie broken buttons, malfuction with drive and so on. Dead Pixels are not considered a defect by Sony of America and will not be warrantied. With this new developement, Video games Plus will no longer be testing PSP units for dead pixels before shipping.

...Videogamesplus.ca sincerely apologizes for any inconveince this has caused any of our customers. Unfortunately with the late Sony announcements and decisions we have been left in a position to do our best to serve you under these unforseen circumstances. As always we appreciate your business and look forward to continuing to serve you in the outmost professional and courteous way.

Sincerely,
Steve Fiocco
President

I picked up my PSP this morning and I love it.

Wanted to get Wipeout, Tiger Woods and Untold Legends, but my Gamestop didn't have Tiger Woods or Untold Legends in yet. I ended up getting Wipeout and Tony Hawk.

So far I've only been able to play Tony Hawk and I'm really digging it. I'll probably go back for Tiger Woods later today and save Untold Legends until next week when I have to go out of town.
