Kevin Costner played a young Lex Luthor in flashbacks in the first movie?

In all seriousness, I love all of this left field casting, mainly to see all of the butthurt it's causing.

I understand that Luthor is supposed to be the one that matches wits (not brawn) with Superman, but even when Hackman played him, he was still an imposing figure. Jesse doesn't give that vibe at all. This 'new' vision of Luthor is going to come off like Boris in GoldenEye.

The amount of butthurt in this thread and X-men is off the charts. I guess comic book movies are serious business round these parts. Or maybe it's just one or two users in both threads that think they are armchair directors.

Meh I just want to see a well made movie that isn't slapped together hurriedly. I'll admit I've bitched a lot about this movie so far but it's mainly because it just feels like they're trying to force so much into this one movie and I just think it's a bad idea.
The casting for the most part I've been fine with thus far. Cavill I was fine with in Man of Steel and I think he'll continue to do a good job. I liked the choice of Affleck from the start even though there was a lot of fanboy rage about it. Gal Gadot probably wasn't my first choice for Wonder Woman but whatever she works. Jeremy Irons as Alfred is also okay even though I probably wouldn't have picked him. They're probably going for a different interpretation of Alfred in this film so it could work fine. Eisenberg though is really the main one that has me wondering and I personally don't see it at all. Then again I didn't exactly love Ledger for The Joker either so who knows. I guess I just think Luthor should be someone a bit older and imposing which Eisenberg honestly doesn't give off at all.

Bryan Cranston would've made an awesome Lex Luthor. Even Jesse thinks so

Here is why the casting is an epic fail. You have to realize they will include a boardroom scene between Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne in this movie. Does anyone think that 6'4" Ben Affleck won't command infinitely more respect in a room against Jesse Eisenberg in a heated argument? Lex will look impotent against a billionaire playboy in Bruce Wayne. Lex needs a certain gravitas and Eisenberg doesn't have it.

Agreed, but based on his casting...they're not even going to try to make him be a tough guy. He'll probably be portrayed as an insecure wimp hiding behind his money (and the security and tech it buys). That's why they went with Eisenberg, he's not going to try and be intimidating physically or anything. I just wish they went with a 40ish (or older) portrayal of Luthor...
Irons is great, looking forward to that... I imagine he'll show up in an early scene and meet with Clark at the Daily Planet or something...saying he represents someone who wants to meet him. I hope that's it, the characters should enter into Supermans world, in Metropolis... save Gotham and the batcave for a later film.

I think that DC see Marvel making inspired casting choices that are sometimes left field, not obvious or celebrity actors and actually great actors who suit the role and bring gravitas to them, rather than bringing star power. This is one of the big reasons that Marvel continues to hold peoples interest. They care about attaching the right person to characters.
Bryan Cranston would've made an awesome Lex Luthor
As for the casting choices today? I like Irons and I'm interested to see how Eisenberg plays Luthor. The simple fact is that we know next to nothing about the script, and how the characters are going to be portrayed. And I'm willing to wait rather then become all butt hurt over it.

Which great casting job did Marvel do exactly? I'll give you Downey Jr which was out of left field, but everyone else they casted in roles could of just as easily been played by another actor. With the exception of Downey no one had that "Christopher Reeve" type magic.
I don't like the Eisenberg casting, but I don't find it any worse than Affleck. Both are generally one-note actors.
I actually would rather see Irons as Luthor than Alfred. He has the wrong presence for Alfred.

Watch how he fidgets the more they talk about it, especially when they get to Lex Luther. It's clear he was already up for the role.

I hope this project gets delayed yet again, the entire creative team is discarded, Affleck becomes director and it simply becaumes a MOS sequel with no shoehorned DCU characters.

The more telling bit is when someone promptly announces they are out of time the moment they bring up Lex Luthor and potential casting of said role.

Honestly, Eisenberg as Luthor is about the only thing about this movie that does have me excited.

Apparently Geoff Johns is serving as consultant for this movie. Given the recent casting news, I bet Geoff Johns is consulting about as much as he did for the Green Lantern movie. Meaning, they simply put his name in the credits and called it a day.
I think he's a terrible actor so this one time you and I comepletely disagree.

I like the casting of Jesse Eisenberg. It says to me Lex Luthor isn't going to be a grandstanding, beard scratching super villain. But maybe someone more rooted in reality. As much as thats possible in a superhero movie.
Then again I have very low interest in most comic book movies. Whether its the director, the writers or the cast, it doesn't make a huge difference to me. At the end of the day the giant corporate entity behind these films has a product to sell, and it has to appeal to the widest audience possible. The films can succeed within these corporate boundries, but only moderately. No matter who is attached to the film, the film has to exist within the studio's parameters of what they think is the most marketable. Thats probably the reason theres been over 100 comic book movies and none have been anything more than pretty good. I don't think any studio in the world will give a director enough rope to make a comic book movie that might actually be great.

Thor was pretty solid casting as well, and Ruffalo as the third-time Hulk finally seems like a great fit.
Obviously not as iconic as Reeve's Superman but I'll take Marvel's casting record any day over Kilmer, Clooney, Routh, Reynolds, et al.
I'll hold judgement on these recent castings until we actually see what comes to light, but I don't have a ton of faith thus far.
