I thought the last we saw of him was Bolton handing over his hide to someone. I just start re-reading ACOK so maybe I am mis-remembering.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season #1 - SPOILERS thread

My husband and I watched episode 7 on HBOGo last night, and this show has finally convinced my husband to read the books. I've been trying for 4 1/2 years! He would start GoT, get through the prologue, then put it down for something else.

We had a pretty interesting conversation after the episode last night. He said he admired Ned's determination to be honorable even if it gets him killed. I wonder how many other non-readers will be surprised at the events of episode 9.

Summaries of episodes 8-10:

Spoiler:

Episode 08: “The Pointy End”:
In the aftermath of Nedʼs capture, Syrio and Arya face off against Lannister guards, while Cersei manipulates Sansa to her own ends. Robb rallies his fatherʼs northern allies against Tywin Lannister and heads south to war. Tyrion forms an uneasy alliance with the hill tribes and reunites with his father. Jon lashes out at Thorne and battles a mysterious attacker from beyond the Wall. Dany is forced to reconcile her desire to conquer Westeros with Drogoʼs savagery after the Dothraki raid a peaceful village. (Written by George R.R. Martin; directed by Daniel Minahan.) Playdates: June 5, 7, 8, 11 and 15

Episode 09: “Baelor”:
With Sansaʼs life in danger, Ned makes a fateful decision. Catelyn brokers an unsavory deal with the slippery Walder Frey. Tyrion acquires a mistress and is forced by his father to fight on the front lines. Robb wins his first major victory and captures a prized prisoner. Jon is rewarded for his valor and discovers a dark secret about Maester Aemon. As Drogoʼs wound festers, Dany defies Qotho and puts her trust in the enslaved witch Mirri Maz Duur. (Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss; directed by Alan Taylor.) Playdates: June 12, 14, 15 and 18

Episode 10: “Fire and Blood”
As tragic news spreads across the Seven Kingdoms, Bran and Rickon share a prophetic dream, Catelyn interrogates Jaime about her sonʼs fall, and Robbʼs destiny is forever changed. After a surprising decision by his father, Tyrion heads south. Meanwhile, Arya assumes a new identity in an attempt to escape Kingʼs Landing, and Sansa is terrorized by Joffrey. At the Wall, Jon is forced to choose between the Nightʼs Watch and the family he left behind. Across the sea, Dany pays a terrible price for her love, but finds new hope. (Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss; directed by Alan Taylor.) Playdates: June 19, 21, 22 and 25

My wife by the 2nd/3rd episode said that Ned's fatal flaw is that he is honorable to a default. I think it might shocking to kill off the 'main' hero, but she is already starting to bond with the 'real' main characters, namely, arya, Jon and Tyrion.

Yep, my husband's in the same boat I think. His favorite characters so far are Arya and Jon. I've been reading these books since GoT was originally released in hardcover (have a first edition signed by GRRM!), so it's been a long time, but I don't remember being too upset about Ned's death. I was surprised, yes, but he was never a favorite character. The first deaths that truly and utterly shocked me were in the red wedding. I really hope we get a season 3!

Re: Game of Thrones, Season #1 - SPOILERS thread

Regarding deaths in the books vs. the series:
Spoiler:
I've seen several references to GRRM having confirmed that a character who doesn't die until book 3 will die before this season of the TV series is over. I haven't looked up a source to confirm that he did say that, but if true, I have a theory that it will be:
Spoiler:
Joffrey.

It's been a while since I've read the books, so it's entirely possible that I'm forgetting important details, but does he do anything plot-wise in book 2 or the first half of book 3 that Cersei couldn't accomplish anyway in the same role as Queen Regent, but to Tommen instead of Joffrey? If it happened in episode 10 it would give a bit more closure for viewers of the TV series, who'll still be steaming over Ned's death in episode 9. Just a theory...any thoughts?

Re: Game of Thrones, Season #1 - SPOILERS thread

Interesting, but how are they going to fit danys rise of the dragons and the crowning of the king of the north?

And do we have to spoilerize things in here?

Re: Game of Thrones, Season #1 - SPOILERS thread

I'm not sure about spoilers, but since I was listing a character who dies in book 3 I thought I'd err on the side of safety.

And what do those two things you mentioned have to do with the character I talked about,
Spoiler:
assuming everything else is the same but Tommen is king instead of Joffrey (with Cersei still calling the shots)?

I may be forgetting important things, that's why I'm asking.

Oh..my thought is how they would fit everything into that 10th episode..including the character you were talking about.

Took out the spoiler tags since this is supposed to be a spoiler thread for all the books in the series. I can't see Joff getting the axe early at all for a couple reasons:

1. GRRM has confirmed that the character who dies is a minor character. Hoster Tully maybe?

2. Without Joffrey, you don't have his big wedding in book 3 where Sansa runs and Tyrion is imprisoned/tried. I don't see the producers changing that major plot point over to Tommen.

Maybe he meant a character who is a minor.

My wife just finished the end of episode 5 (just like I did - Charter is having trouble with our HBO... :S ). Where Ned is left with something sticking out of his knee and all of his guards dead.

My wife said something like "but he's a main character, so I know he'll be OK. Main characters don't get killed." LOL. I had to be careful not to give anything away.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season #1 - SPOILERS thread

So coming back to the continued featuring of Roz ... do you think we'll continue to be subjected to this character in future seasons? I'm not sure why HBO wants us to care about her. It's not like they've developed her as a character. She's just a piece of ass to be shown when HBO feels like they need to show a piece of ass.

Meanwhile, important, impactful characters like the Hound have been almost entirely marginalized.

Looking forward next week (I presume) to Jon's battle with the walker in the Old Bear's tower. They'd better not ignore Ghost in that scene.

Someone mentioned in the network upfront threads that Sean Bean's new show wouldn't interfere him with being in season 2

Some of the comments from the non-readers in these threads are great. "Can't wait for Drogo to invade Westeros and kill Joffrey!"

I don't think they can fit that in this season though.

My guess is that for the TV show Roz=Shae. I do find it funny how Roz has more screen time than a lot of important characters, and this is the only explanation I can think of.

This is one thing that has bugged me about the series. Important people/things (wolves, Jon getting Samwell into the NW) are barely/not mentioned, yet Roz gets more screen time than anyone not House Lannister/Stark.

I am currently re-half way through book 3 and I can see them dumping Crannister completely. I just hope they do not dump too much from the books.

I didn't think of that, but it's not a bad theory. This gives the character a little backstory throughout the season, rather than suddenly being introduced at the end.

Do you mean Craster? Seems like he'd be a necessary component, as the encounters with him set off a number of plot lines, especially for Samwell.

Roz is there to give us exposition, not sure why everyone seems to be upset over her.

lol true.

But seriously, we need to get all of this exposition going on, HBO figured they could get the T&A/Exposition all in one shot.

Shae has been cast. My guess is that they'll substitute her for Alayaya or Chataya.

I mentioned this in the HBO Go thread, but I hated hated HATED that scene with Littlefinger, and I really am sick of Roz getting more screen time than characters that are actually important in the books.
