Re: The Matrix -- new film from Drew Goddard

I think what they need to do is somehow get Western audiences up to speed on many of the concepts in the sequels that they pulled from Vedic traditions. I think those were jumps that most just didn't...

Re: The Fantastic Four (2025, D: Shakman) S: Pascal, Kirby, Moss-Bachrach, Quinn

I don't watch TV/series, for the most part.

Oh also, question: I'm not huge on FF. Did the 2005 movie originate the "Johnny flies and lights up a big '4' in the sky" thing?

Re: The Fantastic Four (2025, D: Shakman) S: Pascal, Kirby, Moss-Bachrach, Quinn

I've never heard of her and Fishburne did a great job with what he was given, but I guess she will not be Norin Radd, but his lover? I've never heard of Shala-Bal, either, if I'm totally honest.

Re: Movies with long sequences that feel like they could be part of a separate movie

I watched Rollerball (2002), since both of the main podcasts I listen to are covering it within a month of each other.

At the end of the 2nd act of this terrible dystopian, extreme sports movie,...

Re: Dual (2022, W/ D: Stearns) S: Karen Gillan, Aaron Paul

Wife and I watched this last night and I found it pretty frustrating.

The choice to have this inhuman dialogue delivered in the most stilted manner possible never clicked for me and made to hard...

Re: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024, D: Wingard) -- The Reviews Thread

Very fucking stupid, but I had a... chemically enhanced theater experience and I had a lot of fun. I think the Kong vs Godzilla rematch was the best part and I'm anxious for them to stop with...

Re: What's your Unpopular Music Opinion?

My unpopular music opinion is that I'm really not a music guy. I like some stuff I like, but I generally am not into the medium in general. I don't connect with the vast majority of it.
Also, of the...

Re: The One and Only Asian movies reviews, comments, news, and appreciation thread

Technically an Australian production with a majority Asian cast/crew, but wanted to warn people away from Five Blind Dates. Essentially a Lifetime-level romantic comedy (big question mark about the...

Re: Did Anyone Ask for a Remake of "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead"?

Actually looks a bit funnier than I would have expected. It'll probably work well for kids that have never seen the original.

Re: Movie Theaters

I really miss Arclight here in LA. 3 trailers max, no ads. Showing ads at the showtime start is really insane to me. When did that start? I noticed it in Europe in early 2019, but feels like it only...

Great news: The movie will use stop-motion animation

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

If they needed the numerals in their titles, then the OT films wouldn't count either :D

Re: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024, D: Tim Burton) S: Keaton, Ryder, Ortega, O'Hara

...yeah I know it was... And they still went with a "kids singing a creepy version" for the trailer. Disney did the same thing with the Rise of Skywalker and Dial of Destiny trailers. Doesn't matter...

Re: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024, D: Tim Burton) S: Keaton, Ryder, Ortega, O'Hara

Not a fan of the "haunting rendition of a popular song (https://slate.com/culture/2015/07/suicide-squad-trailers-creepy-bee-gees-cover-why-pop-songs-are-getting-weird-in-movie-trailers-video.html)",...

re: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024, D: Tim Burton) S: Keaton, Ryder, Ortega, O'Hara

Yeah, but it's about how the movie feels. Like you can have the same actors, same humor, same everything, but it feels off because it's all HD. It ALWAYS feels off to me.

I think sci-fi is a...

re: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024, D: Tim Burton) S: Keaton, Ryder, Ortega, O'Hara

This looks like it has the same problem as all the legacy sequels: technology and styles have advanced so much that it doesn't look like it's even in the same universe. It's too slick, too crisp, too...

Re: Civil War (2024, D: Garland) S: Dunst, Spaeny, Moura

It sounds basically like it's a Drive situation. Using trailers to emphasize the setpieces, while it's a little quieter and more suspenseful. It has precedent. I fell for that with The Grey, as well.

Re: Civil War (2024, D: Garland) S: Dunst, Spaeny, Moura

Yeah, that's like...
I guess if you're exclusively looking at the success/efficacy of the state or economic policy, that almost makes sense? And ignoring the rights and well-being of the populace as...

Re: The Unpopular Movie Opinion Thread, Part III

I'd lump Scorsese in there as well. To me they aren't super overrated, just that the wrong kinds of men have really latched themselves on to those specific directors and become "film bros"

Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

I didn't realize examining the themes of a film and the condition of the current generation of Americans was considered "boring"

That said, definitely glad indigenous peoples are getting more...

Re: The Last Kumite (2024) -- S: Billy Blanks, Cynthia Rothrock, Michel Qissi, Matthias Hues

Meanwhile I'm down the Golden Harvest and In the Line of Duty wells on Tubi for free.

Honestly, I would be down to watch this on streaming, but it has the same problem as all these other retro...

Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

"What Was I Made For" plays during the film proper, though. During an extremely emotional culmination of Barbie's character arc and the movie's theme, I might add.
